You can take liberties with safety if you know what you are doing, what the risks are, and how to minimise those risks.

An obvious example for us is operating equipment with the covers off - we should know which bits of the innards to keep our fingers off!

Removing the safety earth from a scope because you have an unknown path to earth in a power supply does not seem like a good idea.
