Bell Set No 20 X2 - What exactly did they do?
Hi, I have two Bell Set 20's here:
What / how were they utilised? Were they just an additional ringer? Oh and there is a little phone without a dial - would that have been used in conjunction withe the bell set? Thanks SEAN

Re: Bell Set No 20 X2 - What exactly did they do?
They were like a mini switchboard which could have one or two extensions. Used mainly as a 'manager/secretary' set up with the secretary having the 'main phone connected to the Bellset 20 and the 'boss' as the extension. The generator was used to ring the extension/s. Note how the two extensions were individually called by means of a pressbutton being pressed whilst turning the generator at the main phone to call. The two extension Plan 5 was only available between phones within the same building. The extension on a Plan 7 could be the other side of the town!
They were known as Extension Plans 5 (for two extensions) and a Plan 7 for a single extension. See attached photos of GPO 'N' diagrams for the arrangements. Note that the earlier version of the Bellset that preceded the BS 20 only had a three position switch. The extension/s could be fitted with a dial to dial out when switched through to the exchange line. The 'little telephone without a dial' isn't one that would have been used as an extension. A standard issue GPO phone as per the relevant 'N' diagram would have been used. Last edited by Pellseinydd; 25th Jun 2017 at 12:55 pm. |
