A month on and the restoration of the classic Gec BT2147 continues!

I went to visit John W last weekend to talk and play with old tellies, and to collect the newly rebuilt Bakelite bitch.

I'd originally taken the set to John, along with a Pye VT2 to see if he had a suitable frame transformer, which had gone o/c while I was working on it. Once the Pye was working I ended up leaving the GEC with John as by then the time was getting on.
It was ran up on the bench and worked beautifully. John has done a truly fantastic and high class job on the chassis, replacing the o/c frame transformer and rebuilding the pot panel which had been in a dreadful state. Many of the original resistors and most of the caps were also replaced, and with the help of a suitable tuner the GEC was gradually brought back to life!

This was beyond all my expectations and I'll forever be in John (and interlace's) debt for the time and attention that has been lavished on the old bakelite bitch.

I'm very impressed by this set with its flat faced 9" aluminised 6505A crt. The test card looks truly superb, focus and normal broadcast looks equally as impressive. I can't stop watching it! Probably the best 405 line picture I've seen, helped by a really good tube, which was the one saving grace with this one. It was a real wreck 3 months ago.

Yesterday I managed to salvage the original rubber mask. This was in a sorry old state and was a nightmare to separate from the tube face when I first dismantled the set. It was horribly distorted and cracked, almost gooey in places.

I'd resigned myself to the fact that I'd probably end up recreating a new mask of sorts, so with nothing to lose I immersed it in a bowl of boiling water with the plate glass. It softened up considerably and I was able to pull it all back into shape. Most of the original paint washed of in the process and the mask looked dirty, so I carefully cut the glass out with a scalpel to clean it properly. It stayed in one piece so I dried it off and trimmed the rear circular mount which removed a lot of the distortion.

I was then able to lightly rub it down and glue a lot of the cracks together using superglue and activator. I then sprayed it with 3 coats of pale cream acrylic and it came out quite well. Today I have refitted it to the front of the tube. I will attach the implosion screen to the front and carefully tape its edges around the mask to pull it all into square. I (think) it will all look acceptable when it's back in its box.

That will be a job for another day.....

Matt.

That mask looks great Matt. Let us hope the luck continues. All the best, John.

Here she is, finally all back together and looking very smart!

The last part of the rebuild of the Bakelite Bitch involved the refurbishment of the rubber mask and installing the chassis back into the cabinet. It took several attempts to get everything lined up correctly. I had to slacken and rotate the mask quite a few times before it looked level.
I also raised the tube slightly using new felt pads. Then set the scans up and tweaked the picture shift. Got there in the end and I'm very happy with it!!

It hasn't played up yet either, although after about an hour in use the EHT wants to drop off and the picture goes slightly out of focus. This seems to be getting better the more I use the set so I'm thinking LOPT saturation which may go away eventually. Other than that she's a cracker!!!

A huge thankyou to John W for your help with this one! it was well worth all the hassle and headaches!!

Hi Matt,
What a lovely end result!! That cabinet looks like you have just unboxed it. Every credit to you and John for having the determination to see it through!
Nice collection too. Are you expecting trouble? That looks like a fire extinguisher on the shelf
I hope it will get regular use to watch some vintage programs!
All the best
Nick

Thankyou Nick it was worth every minute. Got no projects left now so I'll be suffering from the usual withdrawal symptoms until something interesting comes along.
I always keep that little fire extinguisher to hand! never had to use it but the thought of losing that lot (and that's a small part of it!) fills me with terror!

Hi Matt,
If you're looking for another project, I don't suppose you fancy having a go at the Ekco T310 that is in my 'free to good home' pile?
The cabinet is pretty grim and the CRT has a wire broken off but could be repaired.
I posted it here https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=136430 in the wild hope that somebody might want it:- They didn't
When I saw the picture of some of your collection, I thought it might be of interest. I can even bring it to Portsmouth!!
All the best

Nick,

Many thanks for such a kind offer. I've got too many similar sets and limited space at the moment so I'll pass on this one. However this could be a good one for Robin to get stuck into. Over to you Robin what do you reckon?

Best regards
Matt

Hi Matt,

I'm glad the GEC turned out ok in the end. The tough ones can be a rignt pain, but then again, more rewarding in the end.
My first TV22 had a lump missing from the front of the case and a duff lopty. I asked Gerry about it and he said it was only good for display. That didn't put me off, but in fact it encouraged me to get into rewinding transformers... It ended up being a very good set, but it took me an age to get there.

Btw, I'm glad to see that the mask was salvaged. The one in my set looked ok for years, but a while back I noticed it was starting to sag. I had been using some turps based cabinet cleaner in the same room and I did wonder if that was what had set it off. I'm not sure how I will tackle it, maybe just turning it upside down will help it?

Cheers
Andy

Andy,

Do you know if anyone has ever tried to make replica CRT masks for the TV22 ?

The one in my set, like many sets of this vintage, has some deterioration, I strengthened it a little by gluing some strips to the rear of it.

I am surprised that no one has made a mask out of expanding foam and carved it to shape. With the edges filled and painted I think it could work. A crude mould to get the basic outline should suffice.

That's a good question, but I feel I should start a new thread on that topic.
