The model number tells you it's French. Apart from that I can't help.

Philips made a lot of very similar radios in their various plants in the late 50s and early 60s. Could you post some photos?

sorry paul, that set was made in clonskeagh dublin in the philips plant , which is still in existance , bif prefix used by philips ireland ltd , stands for b table model , if , irish free state , and the u means ac/dc , love to see a pic if possible so i can authenticate its year of manufacture etc , further for holohaj best regards maitiu.

The initial post describes this radio as B1F (figure one). Should this be BIF (letter eye)?

If it's an IF code radio made in Ireland, there should be a number between the B and IF which denotes the market sector it is intended for - 1 is used for the cheapest and most basic radios, 9 (I think) is used for top of the range luxury models. Most radios are 2 or 3. A B1F code should indicate a cheap radio made in the Philips France factory.

However, given that the OP is in the Republic I guess an Irish made radio is more likely.

yes graham ,bif293u, an ac/dc set ,i have a bif503a here , the chasis ,line up is based on the bx chasis of the late fifties , but i dont think holohajs set is anything like that , we'el wait and see a pic , interesting though, regards maitiu.

Here are some pictures of Maitiu's set. It doesn't really look like any British Philips set of the period though the chassis is fairly typical.
