HMV 1609 radiogram new lease of life
A few years ago I reluctantly "scrapped" an early 1950s HMV radiogram. The cabinet was rough and we didn't have any space for it in the house (my wife's view). However I saved the chassis and front panel with the intention of building a cabinet and using it as a radio. The chassis was given a five star service, changing most of the waxy capacitors and a couple of 220K resistors in the audio amp circuit. The cabinet never materialised as my woodworking skills are almost non existent. Then last week I spotted a bedside cabinet on castors going very cheaply (four pounds) on a local selling site. It was exactly the right size for the HMV front panel and all I had to do was fit a suitable speaker. The results are pictured below and the radio is in daily use in my loft room/man cave. There is space on top for a turntable or tape recorder and the whole thing is easy to move around on it's castors. For the technically minded, the chassis uses B8B valves with a single ended KT81 in the output stage.
