Back when I was working with lasers, I got into generating 16um wavelength coherent light.

The detector was mercury-cadmium-telluride cooled to 77K, and the windows were KRS-5 (Thallium bromo-iodide). A real smorgasbord of nasty bits of the periodic table.

I'm amazed that it seems you can still buy both. Windows from Crystran in the UK and detectors from Judson in the US.
