1946 Red Ekco A22
Hello everyone. I'm new to this so please bear with me. I have a 1946 Red Ekco A22 which I believe was made for the export market only? Any information on this radio would be gratefully received. Thank you

A replica by Gerry Wells? If I am wrong it's unique.

An export variant would almost certainly be without long wave on the dial - probably medium wave and two short wave bands, if that's any help.

A few pictures would be good, and make us all green (or is that red) with envy!

P.S. Don't plug it in until a few checks have been made.

If it is red all the way through and not just painted red it is very valuable
take care of it. |

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
Looking at the pic, it looks like it could well be genuine.
The red versions are said to be rare, the green ones are the ones to try and find, they're super rare! The bottom of the cabinet could well be cracked but is repairable, this will affect the value considerably. Overhauled and working, these sets fetch well over a grand. A red round Ekco (can't remember which model) was sold in Canada last year for around £2500. |

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
Thanks for all the information guys keep it coming. It's definitely red all the way through and not painted. I'm just waiting for the chassis to come back and then I'll post some pics.
Thanks again |

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
Interesting John. Where did it come to light? Was it the Derby area? Green and Red sets are so rare, any information would be of interest. Is it being restored by a Forum member? If the colour goes all the way though that's definitely a plus. There has been disappointment in the past re sets that didn't quite live up to expectations.

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
That looks like a genuine red A22, two have surfaced in Canada and ended up over here in the last decade. It looks like there is another one now to keep them company!

I don't doubt your opinion Carl but I was hoping the owner might tell us a bit more. So far, all the info has gone the one way. Perhaps it's a security concern?

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
Sorry for the delay gents but I work overseas so get little chance to pursue my new hobby. I'm just lucky enough to be able to pay for it. And as for the information all being one way, I did say I was new to this and was after some information ie finding out if I had bought a genuine Red A22.

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
I hope the chassis is coming along nicely - how is the speaker cloth?
It should be a silvery colour, but may have aged to a more golden tone. Please show pictures of the set when completed! |

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
I wonder what happened to this?
I stumbled upon this thread when looking to find any images of the few red Ekcos that are out there. I know that it's almost impossible to tell from photographs, but what are forum members' thoughts on the following set, reported to me as a red A22? Looks to be the wrong red to me, but could be a photo reproduction issue. Regards |

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
Your photo looks consistent with the shade of red shown in the chassis view image of TheBocster's set back in post #7 of this thread.
Without closer detailed pictures it is impossible to be sure, but in my opinion both images depict original sets. I can't spot anything amiss that would lead me to suspect a reproduction. Regards |

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
Possibly a repro as Gerry Wells produced a green one and maybe other colours. Unlikely original.

Re: 1946 Red Ekco A22
From My memory of Gerrys round EKCO repros and I did see several of them being built they were made of MDF.
Gerry was indeed proud of the fact that you could reproduce a round EKCO in such a cheap material. I don't know if this set is genuine or not but I don't think it's one of Gerry's. Cheers Mike T
