Hi

Update

Have finished the wiring today, was unable to get correct wire colours but will buy some shrink sleeving and change wires to correct colouring bit later, as it is wired at the moment

Blue wire replaced ------ Yellow / Black --1.5V

Brown wires --------- replaces the 2 Black / Red wires (which were linked together externally) to 1 black/red wire ------166 v

Red wire still Red wire ------------ 72v

Grey wire replaced ------yellow wire ------ 9v

Connected up and plugged into the battery eliminator today and tested

Results ;-

The instrument panel light has has come on o.k (no smell of burning or anything)

could not see any illumination from valves (but very bright today at moment)

Have noticed that if you touch / wiggle the wires plugged in to battery eliminator a clicking noise can be heard from speaker

Have attached pictures of how wired into battery eliminator think i have connected correctly ?

Radio not working at present

Any suggestions

Clive

You can work out if the way you wired the battery eliminator is correct by measuring anode and screen voltages across the various valve pins and comparing them to the ones specified in the trader sheet. If the valve heaters are on the the bulbs are on you've done something right.

Hi, voltages on HT-, LT- and GB+ are all commoned on the eliminator, but may not be in the set. you should plug in the HT- and GB+ wires.

The QPP/ Screen grid wires are not connected to W,X, etc
See if that helps

Hi Ed

Bit confused as plugged in all the original leads that exit from the set into the terminals on the battery eliminator which i think are the correct terminal points

(should mention that there was not a yellow/black lead from originals wires only black possible yellow has faded away to being just black of the original wires but now have replaced with blue wire), all the others were o.k and colours were just about visible as fabric braiding rotted away

do i need to make a couple of leads to feed in for GB and HT inputs ?

Hi Clive, there is usually a bunch of leads together on these sets that all eventually connect to chassis. These are the GB+, HT- (sometimes via fuse bulb) and LT-.
It should work with only the LT- connected but have a check for the other leads and see.
There should also be the leads from the output valve screen grid connections.

Time for a few voltage readings. Any clicks or crackles?

Hi Ed

Checked valves with the lights switched off tonight , anable to see any light from them so possibily not working/powering on
Am getting slight click / crackle noises if i switch over channel knob on front of radio for a secound , plus tap the wire leads that fit into the battery eliminator (wiggle)

Have checked voltage exiting battery eliminator with the leads plugged in , and to chassis of radio , for the red lead where sould be 72v only getting a reading of approx 10v and for the 166 v only getting a reading of approx 125v , could this be a fault or just power drain when under load ?

Clive

Quite correct. The 'dry battery' - 120v cost 12/6d when some rural farm workers got only 10/- per week. The 'wet battery' (2V accumulator) had to be hawked to the village equivalent of the drug store to be charged (6d) All this applying to remote rural folks of course

Hi Clive , just seen your post of 27 June, did you resolve the voltage readings?
