Channel Master 6510 volume issue
Hi
I am trying to repair a Channel Master 6510. It is in generally fair condition, picks up plenty of stations (or at least what there is on MW around here) and has plenty of volume. The volume is, however, a problem. As soon as the set is switched on its volume is high. Higher than I would normally listen to. If the volume knob is turned further it travels a fair distance with little change in the volume. Then it seems to regain control and turning of the knob increases volume still further. Any suggestions where I should look for a remedy for this? Paul |

Re: Channel Master 6510 volume issue
I came across a video from radiotvphononut who reported the same volume control issue with the 6510 as did a number of those who commented on the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvTWFUNwWEU He replaced the volume control with another from a broken Channel Master. This only fixed the situation temporarily as the issue came back. It looks like I will need to replace the control with a more modern one if I want to set the volume lower. Any suggestions about what would be suitable? The existing control has a black plastic cap with Noble embossed on it. The only markings I can see on the side are 35.11A2 5K ohms. Paul |

Re: Channel Master 6510 volume issue
Have you tried cleaning the control with Servisol or similar product? Also check there is no DC voltage on the control, this can make volume controls noisy in operation.
A photo of the control may help identify a suitable replacement or post information on its physical size, mounting and spindles type. The control is 5 K ohm in value.

Re: Channel Master 6510 volume issue
Hi, thanks. I attach some photographs. If you need a photograph out of circuit it will need to come out anyway.
Yes I used Servisol. When I first tried the switch it was very crackly. The Servisol resolved that but not the underlying problem. As soon as the switch comes on the radio is at high volume. Further turning of the knob takes you through a dead spot. After the dead spot the switch affects the volume progressively taking it from high to max. The length of the shaft is approx 30mm measured from the metal chassis plate to the end of the shaft. The Sams datasheet describes it as 5000 ohm 1/2 watt Channel Master part no E022. Paul |

Re: Channel Master 6510 volume issue
You need a 5K ohm switched potentiometer with a Log law for the variable resistor. You may well find it is In a preferred resistance value of 4.7K.
There is a list of component suppliers, although some may have stopped trading at. https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=55701 Check what you order will fit and that the shaft is the correct type.

Re: Channel Master 6510 volume issue
Three terminals on the switch is unusual. Is it a single pole changeover type?
Anyway, only two seem to be used so any switched pot with at least one switch contact will do

Re: Channel Master 6510 volume issue
Thanks for the advice.
I sent off for a couple of switched potentiometers from Bowood and fitted one. The volume now starts low as it should so I am pleased with that. If I come across one that is a bit closer to the original I may swap it out but it works fine. I still need to decide what to do with the missing handle. It is not really a portable but the space for the handle could do with something to occupy it. I will probably build a plastic fillet and use the existing screw holes to fix it. That would restore the curve of the top of the radio and would be replaceable in the distant prospect that I find an original part. |
