That was fast Trevor, you could almost do repairs while you wait

I've been writing to Trevor on the PM facility but I just wanted to congratulate him here for such quick work, it shows that being self-taught as l am is a poor second to being a time-served technician.

As he stated earlier, the use of an isolation transformer and oscilloscope were instrumental in fault finding.

When I rebuild the radio ( Trevor had the chassis only and l kept the fragile plastic case) it will be my workshop radio and when next l get stuck on something, as I'm sure l will, it will serve as a tribute to the skills and knowledge available from the kind people on this forum.

Thanks to all who contributed...

Hi Ken, I'm pleased Trevor has been able to sort your radio and so quickly. Like you I am self taught, but nothing beats a time served technician. Well done Trevor.

John.

Thanks guys for the kind words.
The fault was odd indeed and yes it was indeed light sensitive.
It makes me wonder if it was the PCB rather than the valve that was effected by light?
The radio will be collected by Royal Mail tomorrow so Ken should have it back for the weekend.

Well, it's back!

Trevor has done a great job of the new valve socket and l couldn't wait to hear the sound of the radio. The speaker was connected, valves in, switched on.

IT'S ALIVE! MWAHAHA!

On Medium Wave about 13 stations can be heard, which is unusually good for my location. I'll wait until I have to get up in the middle of the night to listen to Long Wave.

It's now in the kitchen for the weekend so I can give it a good run, then back to my workshop.

After Christmas I'm going to fit a bulb and holder to illuminate the scale and repair, with Araldite, the broken plastic chassis securing lug nearest the volume knob.

As usual l pencilled the date and my initials on the back of the chassis, with the qualifier +Trevor.

I'll close with a quote from Ken Dodd: "This (show) is educational ; when you get home tonight you'll say ' Well that taught me a lesson'!"

Just watched Trevor's video of the repair, radio sounds really good!

Well done both.

Hi.
Many thanks for the update.
It was an odd issue and initially I really thought it was coincidence the fault cleared but after some thoughts and a soak test it was obvious that the PCB was the issue. The original base may have responded to tightening with a needle but removing it gave me the opportunity to clean that part of the PCB and fit a new one which I had in stock.

What a great result. Congrats to Trevor and I'm happy you are reunited with your radio and checking out the airwaves at all times of day and night!

Thanks Al and I'm glad to see your project is back on the bench. I always wonder what's going on when the OP goes quiet after a problematic thread. We are all getting a bit stir crazy and looking back on this thread l can see the rollercoaster of emotions I've been through!
