Found in a box with other old 60's and 70's phone spares.Looks like it would flash on /off when a call is received.No numbers or codes

About 8 leads coming out,of single core wire.

does the light depress Into the box at all? it looks a bit like a panic button to me with those contacts, some wires other than Zone could be Power and Tamper?

purely a guess though.

Yes the orange button does depress.I'm not sure what 'Zone ,Power and tamper' mean.

Definitely part of an alarm system if that's what the wires are actually for.

Power: Usually 12VDC, exactly what it says
Zone: Connected to the alarm control unit. If the zone ciruit is broken, an alarm is sounded. Alarms are usually divided into zones so that the controller can indicate which door, widow etc has been violated.
Tamper: A continuous loop to each sensor etc to verify that the cable or sensor hasn't been tampered with. Typically cutting the cable or removing the cover from a junction box or sensor will break the tamper loop.

From what era are you describing?this item was in with old bakelite phones and other 50's stuff.

Its a switch - push to turn on, and twist to turn off. However you can also push it hard to make another set of contacts, and there is a solonoid to release the latch.

Hence press it hard to buzz an extension, it will be held in while the call is in progress - twist it to release the call or release remotely by using the solonoid - used as part of an entry phone system.

Well I remember a version of this with three buttons in a remote unit that was used as an entry phone - the buttons were coloured green/amber/red for enter/wait/engaged. I used it to control model trains using the solonoid release connected together via emergency stop buttons. It worked well.

Presumably you mean giving a gentle push latches it but is user-releasable by twisting, whereas a firm push latches it via the solenoid?
