Thanks for sharing the Serial Number Mike.

Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no way to age the Mk V's which don't have
the Date in the normal format after the 8V.
I am hoping in the future, that we may be able to get close by comparing Serials with Meters
that have a known Date.
One of the purposes of this Thread.
I haven't detected a pattern yet, but it is a work in progress and I remain hopeful.

The Mk V's are notorious for missing Dates, AVO simply didn't date a lot of them.
To a lesser extent the Mk VI and VII for some reason.

Nice Meter by the way. It's very satisfying having a perfect AVO of any Model.

My late fathers AVO 8 Mk3,still going strong s/n 90462.169. He was given it when the business he had worked for folded after being taken over (1974).

Hello, today i received an AVO 8 (mk1) with serial number 62149-C-657. It is working and will be a good one for my collection.

It has a metal case, but it is not a panclimatic. I will ask this in other post.

Hello, i just acquired an old AVO...., i think it is a 34 range one, model 4. Here you are its serial number: 25-5007

i think was made in February 1935, is that correct??

When i receive it, i will show you with better photos and will see if it works or needs attention.

Good one for my collection!!

Hi Aitor,

Funny you should mention that, I was looking at that exact same Meter.
I think it might be a 36 Range (Model 5) as it seems to have 4 AC Voltage Ranges.

The Photo's were not very clear, so will be great if you can confirm which Model and
if that is a 25 or 26 Date. It was very difficult to tell. I came to the conclusion it was 26,
and that fits in with 5007, but I wouldn't want to bet Money on it at this stage.

The Starting Price was a bit High for me.
I opted instead for another Model 5 in considerably worse shape, which I took pity on. (As one Does)!

No Serial Number on this one as yet, as the Scaleplate is badly De-laminated.
I'm hoping the Serial may be on the back of the Movement when I finally get the Case off.
No idea what I'm going to find inside! Screws are all missing, but Case still wedged on and won't come off.

It is missing one of it's Screw Terminals unfortunately, so I will need to look out for a replacement, which will probably be more difficult than re-producing the Scaleplate!
Otherwise, it's in pretty good cosmetic condition.

Your AVO looks great, solid, let’s hope there is something inside , as in mine.... all the screws are missing as well.

The price of mine was little bit high, but I live in Canary islands and I have no many chances to buy them, as if i lived in England, in the sunday markets, etc...

When i receive it in a few days, i will post better photos to see clearly the serial number/date and model. My idea is try to restore as original. (have you got a photo of the original battery cover?)

I am going to receive another one, a 7 mk2, in a very good shape.

Hi Aitor,

This is probably best on it's own Thread, as it is not really serial or Nato Number related,
but please find the Photo's of the Battery Cover attached.

But since we both have Model 5's (to be confirmed) requiring imminent attention, a new Thread would be useful.

Moderators,

Please feel free to move this to a "36 Range Restoration" Thread if you feel
it's appropriate.

Very good idea, i just open a new thread to speak about our 36 AVOs: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...92#post1099492

Mod note:
We can move posts, but can't change the time order, so these posts would have appeared before the opening posts in the new thread.

I've just taken delivery of two more Model D meters.

Also noticed a few more 9 sx's turning up on that auction site, typical after I just bought a load of them. I don't need any more, but there's always temptation!

Well I didn't need anymore Model D's, but couldn't resist!

Serials to follow.

Peter's Model 1 Type HRM is the same spec. as mine, and indicates average production of 54 units/month between July 1948 and January 1950. Many miniature bobbins inside- none of mine had gone o/c which was a little surprising.
Lubricating the ball/spring detents on the rotary switches caused problems with liberated grit on mine, and i ended up removing the selectors, cleaning up and re-lubricating.
Battery compartment mod. image follows.

Type HRM with C cell holder & 4 x AA holder with a wire bridged across the vacant fourth receptacle. I gave both holders quite long fly leads so they could be removed easily for changing batteries. The white spacer pad looks like some sort of closed cell aerated polythene, chosen for stability.

Thanks TowerRadio and AVOcollector for your serial Numbers.
It's much appreciated.
Fantastic to see AVO's still alive and well in New Zealand

I have logged these in the Survey Database.
I will endeavor to get the next list published before Christmas.

This forum is still very much alive, and any AVO Meter serial Numbers out there are
still very much appreciated, even though Submissions have been very few
over the last few Months. Don't let that fool you into thinking the Task is finished.
There is so much more we can learn from the surviving Meters out there.

If anybody requires any information regarding the Serial Numbers on the current
Database, please don't hesitate to PM me.

Regards

Ian

Sinewave,

Excellent, a few more Type D's have been saved.
I'm still looking for a decent Type D myself.

Any chance we can get the Serial Numbers?
Also, any chance of the Serials Numbers from your Huge Military Stash and referenced to the NSN as previously discussed?

This would help enormously with the NATO research.

Yes I'll get those for you. The D's are in a box in the kitchen so they're easy to get. The military stash is piled in the garage, I quickly went through the NSNs and as I take each one out of it's case and clean them off I'll put the serials up. I certainly have quite a few of them.

I need to add lots to this thread and Jeremy's sheet too, I've acquired all sorts and types.

Five more just added to the Google database, after a successful bid at the Royal Wootton Bassett auction yesterday. Nothing special but glad to rescue them. All had old batteries in and now don't!

Avo 40 Mk1 - 1707-B-948
Avo 40 Mk2 - 1033-B-961.F
Avo 7 Mk2 - 51026-A-1054
Avo 8 Mk2 - 63624-C-857
Avo 8 Mk2 - 152757-C-163

Mostly working but some are reading low. The 1957 8 Mk2 is spot on!

Off topic but the box of Avos included a lovely original Avodapter set in original box. Nice bit of history and still possibly useful.

Jeremy

...and just found this hiding:
Avo 7 Mk1 11914-A-1049

and I do have these items but they are not logged as they have NO serial numbers
Avo DA114
Avo Type D (previous owner repainted damage on faceplate over serial number)

I had one of those anonymous meters but then found the s/n pencilled on the magnet and the rear of the scaleplate.

Unfortunately the Type D has no markings at all inside, either on the meter backplate or the magnet.
And of course the DA114 has no meter! It has lots of chips inside and some extremely jolly nixie tubes, and even works, but no serial number. Shame.
