Default Fitting a connector intended for RG214/U to RG213/U

Hi, I am faced with sourcing some 7~16 DIN plugs to fit RG213/U cable. It seems these are available only from US and Chinese sources.

I note that similar connectors are available locally, from RS and Farnell, but these are for RG214/U cable.

I understand RG214/U cable differs from RG213/U in having a silver plated centre conductor and a double braid, making it slightly fatter overall.

Question: can I 'get away with' fitting a 7~16 DIN plug intended for RG214/U to RG213/U cable? I thought it might perhaps be possible with the slightly thinner RG213/U - but not the other way round...

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve

I think you would be safe doing that

In general I have often fitted "RG214" connectors to RG213 cable, but never on a 7/16 DIN

This connector says it fits both 213 and 214

https://www.enrgtech.co.uk/product/c...48/J01120A0101

CCS also has this one which ios solder/clamp but it looks like the MOQ is 10 off?

An alternative would be use the correct N type and then an adapter N-f to 7/16 M

It depends on the cable fitting.

Crimp or gland?

The supplied outer crimp and boot could be a bit small for getting the double screen in.

Most coax cables are sized by the outer diameter of the dielectric. THey build inwards (air spacing, inner diameter etc to set Zo. They build outwards... braid(s) Jacket, armour as needed.

So a 50 Ohm 213 will do 50 Ohm 223 as far as the inner and dielectric fitting are concerned. It lkeaves yu the braid and jacket to worry about.

Cables are built out of combinations of component parts, so there aren't as many to worry about as first appears.

I have done this in the past with satisfactory results. However it is worth noting that some cable sold as RG-213 is slightly thinner than "proper" MIL standard RG-213 which could be problematic in this case.

Crimp.

I think it's actually the other way round here? The connector will be for fatter RG214. I'm hoping to put the crimp sleeve onto the thinner RG213.

I was probably thinking of RG223 ! Sorry

I seem to remember an RG214 N-type fitted on RG213 never felt as solid as a 213 N-type and you could always tell it wasn’t the right connector. Is loss an issue for your application? If not, would a short tail of RG214 with the correct connectors on both the 213 and 214 be an option?

Might also provide a suitable point to fit a VSWR meter, power meter or sig gen if interfacing to the DIN connector could be an issue.

Hi Steve

RG214 is a larger outer diameter than RG213 however you could choose to use
RG213 with it's RG 213 N type connectors and use N to 7/16 adapters which i have done in the past.
There may be slightly more loss dependent of operating frequency but is another option
