Cosmos VS6 Metropolitan Vickers - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Dear forum members,

Last week I picked up a Cosmos VS6 set.
I can't find a lot of information on the Cosmos VS6 set.
Does this mean that there aren't that many sets left ?
Unfortunatelly the VS6 came without valves.
Does anyone have suggestions for substitutes for the oribinal and very rare to find SP18 and B4 valves?

Search for the Cosmos Receiver Unit VR3 which was made by Metropolitan Vickers.

Valves with a B4 base are available but the SP18 will be very rare.

Search also for the Cosmos Radiophone Amplifying Unit A5 which is probably the audio amplifier stage of the receiver.

Hi Rudy that is the same as mine ,do you have a plug on coil unit with it. there is a three stage audio amp switchable to two stage, it switches one valve out of circuit, the rf section has two valves , there are four what look like coils they are an fact resistors three on the af amp and one on the rf section that one is 60k ohm no doubt the grid leak resistors will be o/c or very high , from left to right the coils should read 30k /30k/60k .that should give you something to be going on with , Mick.

It looks like you have a long wave coil pack there , 1400 to 3200 meters ,is that the only one that came with the set . I had the medium wave coil pack and had to make a long wave one , are you ok with checking the coils/ resistors let us know , Mick.

Mick, on your schematic for the A5 amplifier I can't see an anode load resistor for the third valve.

Does the anode current pass through a high impedance speaker or output transformer?

It would feed a high imp speaker or in my case an output tx cheers Mick.

Mick, the set came with an extra medium wave coil pack, 300 to 800metres.

Is this what you are looking for?

That is good news Rudy , did you manage to check the resistors/coils Mick.
Sorry for the confusion I was referring to the coils which are an fact resistors , but I will check my original L/W coil pack ref your readings. Mick.

I was wondering if some of the established British heavy electrical manufacturers had made radios or TVs, even if it was a short lived venture like English Electric.

From what I remember in the Setmakers some made components but not complete sets.

British Thomson Houston were in this category from what I remember.

BTH did make complete radios. English Electric only made TVs as far as I know.

BTH started ,like a lot of others with crystal sets,ie the double detector set for one.

One pair is display only.
The other two are used but good.
