Please, help identifying this unusual device! (polarised telegraph relay)
Good morning.
In my collection, I have an unusual device that was made in England. Not sure what this is. If anybody has an idea, I would love to know. Is this a transformer, a motor, or something else? Sending some photos. |

An interesting one! It does bear a similarity to a magnetic detector for sea mines. Does the contact move across in the presence of a magnetic field? I am intrigued to find out what S & M might refer to.

I think it's some kind of polarised telegraph relay. M and S indicating Mark and Space.

Yes, I too reckon it's a bipolar relay - probably dating from pre-WWII
(I never came across one as old as that, I was much more familar with the later plug-in type in a rectangular greenish-grey aluminium case) |

Yes, it is a polarised telegraph relay (often known as a Carpenter Relay) and, as already mentioned, probably made by Creed.
Some of them have Air Ministry markings and date from the WW2 era. |

I have got a 1960s one that is much smaller.
About 40 years ago I opened it up to look inside. It has a moving coil like a meter and when I tested it I was able to get it to switch with an LDR and no amplification. It is in storage in a box at the bottom of a big stack. |

I spotted the one I said about in post#9 and have started a new thread for it so that this thread can stay on topic.
