Default sourcing parts : wish list

As someone who is intrigued by possibilities of parts sourcing, I was wondering what might make up your "top 10 " wish list of the parts you would find most useful in equipment restoration ?
Imagine, you've waved a wand and a box of useful spares turns up on your workbench
What would be in it I wonder ?

Once we have a short list, maybe it would be possible to run a poll of some sort.
I suspect we may not reach a unanimous verdict, as we each have different interests : radio, TV,audio, comms, test etc.

But if we never ask.....

If I'm revisiting old and uninteresting ground, then I will understand.

Not to do with restoration, but I'd like a box of Aladdin coil formers in various diameters with slugs for homebrew stuff.

Hmmmm....., spares for the discerning, let me see;
NOS capacitors, mains trannys, output trannys, rectifier valves, output valves, knobs, tag strips, valve holders, NOS transistors, and scale lamps.
Just my wish list,
Neil

My magic toolbox/workshop/Storeroom would have the following:-

1. MW22-16
2. Bush two pin plugs
3. EKCO 2 pin plugs
4. Boxes of nice spanking NOS LOPT's (all hermetically sealed)
5. The valve I always need, but just happens to be not in my stock pile
6. Original Pam long shaft pre-set, come to think of it another box full of every type you need
7. Rectifier sticks all sorts
8. pF's @ 6kV and above
9. phone number for a local CRT re-gunner doing them at 1957 prices of £6.00
10.An unending supply from the back room of old 405 sets needing restoration

Thanks for the opportunity to dream

Chris

In no particular order:

Dial cord.
Tuning indicator valves.
Low-value, high voltage, axial-leaded capacitors (630V polystyrene or ceramic).
Knobs.
Tygan loudspeaker aperture material (assorted types).
Damp-rag-resistant replacement dial glasses.
Moulded-carbon log potentiometers, with long metal shafts (with and without switches).
New electrolytic capacitors, tag-ended, dual and triples, with fixing clamps.
Wander plugs, 1/8", in colours other than red and black.
Coil formers, screening cans, and trimming slugs.

1. A new Emiscope 6/6
2. A co-ax plug as in the picture.
3. The socket for the above plug.

For home-build projects...A QP166 front-end for the Amateur Bands double superhet described in the RSGB handbook 4th edition plus the requisit 85Khz I.F's, BFO unit (although I could build that), Eddystone 898 tuning dial and crystals....

For general use, double and triple electrolytics, some mains energised speakers or at least the coils to repair them with, a 994V to replace the detector valve in a Superinductance set, B4, B5, B7, B8A and Loctal valveholders, Philips Beehive trimmers (need a few of those), 3.5V .15A pilot bulbs, DAC90A output transformers, PM24M, EM34's, concentric pots, 500K and 1meg log pots with double-pole switch, droppers (various), EBL31's....

I wish......!

All the parts to rebuild an early 4 valve 1920's radio that should be inside a nice quality BBC marked mahogany cabinet I took pity on a while back. I have only ever seen another empty cabinet at auction so I have no idea what should be in it (maybe it didn't work very well)!

Hi,

A giant garage heater and enough money to run it.

Kind regards, Col.

Also not to do with vintage radios but I'd love a huge box of old 30's plug sockets, light switches and god knows what else!

I've already got most of those, and would agree with your choices! To your list I would add a full range of metal-can smoothing electrolytic capacitors in all sizes, values combinations and working voltages, plus one of every type of 'capacitor block' used in 1930s radios - all in perfect condition, of course!

I was recently given a 1960s TV engineer's wooden travelling fold-out spares box, in excellent condition and still containing some spares and TV valves, plus some cardboard component drawers containing NOS RS Components stock, all boxed and bagged, including new unopened 100 foot reels of drive cord! I am such a happy bunny...

Are these difficult to come by?

Can't remember if I saw one in a friends box of assorted glassware...

...virtually impossible Dave. There have been various requests in these forums for a 994V and some people have been looking since the 80's. I don't think it had a long production life as it was designed as an anode bend detector. They went out when superhets came in....mid 1930's.

I've been using a 164V but it's not as good....

Sideband,

I know its a terrible question to ask, but what would be the 'going rate' for a 994V these days? If I remember right, it will be boxed in an original mullard box but neither of us have the facility to test.

I could always enquire as to whether he wants to sell.

Thanks, Dave.

Think your too late Trevor looks like he's built it all ready, hence his comprehensive stock or is he an anode current hoarder
