Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
Hello, i found this in Spain, do not know the history of this AVO and Rolls Royce but i seems interesting, so as i did not have a mk 6 in the collection, i bought it...
Does anybody knows anything about this particular AVO "Rolls Royce"? Last edited by Guest; 17th Dec 2018 at 11:32 pm. |

Re: Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
That badge looks to be fitted by someone after the meter was sold. I assume from the badge that it means no more than it was owned by Rolls Royce, a british car and aviation engine manufacturer.
It is nice to have some aviation related Avos. I have a DA116 which was owned by British Midland.

Yes, i suppose that the badge was fitted after the meter goes out the factory, but my question is if it is known to exist a contract between AVO and RR, and also for what that AVO were used in the RR and things like that.
Thanks |

Re: Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
Personally I would think there would be a good chance of it being an AVO that was owned by RR to use for a variety of electrical testing in a variety of workshops. These could be the works maintenance department or in one of the shops or lines that fitted electrical equipment, lighting etc. RR fitted lots of custom electrical equipment to buyers' specifications.

I have two 9s that have BRC Portsmouth on them.
It looks much more like it was done at the factory than the RR one. |

Re: Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
Note that it says 'Rolls-Royce AND ASSOCIATES ltd'.
The aero engine lot are 'Rolls-Royce (1971) Ltd' but I understand that may be changing. The car lot are now BMW using the Rolls Royce name under licence from the holder, the 1971 firm. The car firm used to be Vickers using the name under licence as Rols Royce motors ltd. R-R and associates are the branch which does nuclear propulsion systems for submarines. It changed its name to Rolls-Royce Marine Power Operations ltd. So that AVO really is the nuclear option. David

Re: Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
The plate gives what I would call the "Asset Number". There would have been a list kept somewhere of these and likely occasional audits to check whether any assets had walked.

Also helps in hunting down things for periodic calibration checks. Also auditors want annual asset checks..

Re: Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
Looks like it has a couple of tamperproof cal. stickers on it. Do these offer any clues?

I will load better photos in a few days, when i´ll receive it.
Hope these photos give a little bit more information. "RRA" marked on the back of the case. No idea of the meaning. The tamperproof are the calibration stickers from 2005 Last edited by Guest; 18th Dec 2018 at 4:45 pm. |

Re: Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
Rolls Royce Associates is something I've not heard of. The ' Car lot' were Rolls Royce Motor Cars, and Rolls Royce and Bentley Motor Cars, based in Crewe, before being split in the late nineties to Rolls Royce owned by BMW (Goodwood), and Bentley owned by VW Group (still making Bentleys in Crewe). I don't believe the label in question originates from either of those two entities having been responsible for calibration of instrumentation for a department in Crewe a few years ago.

Re: Avometer 8 mk6 "Rolls Royce"
Rolls Royce & Associates was a joint operation by Rolls plus Vickers shipbuilding and I think Foster-Wheeler. They kept themselves very separate from cars and aeroplanes (I was at Filton back in the early seventies). Being involved entirely in defence and nuclear stuff they were isolated to the point of no contact with the rest of Rolls.
THe engraved RRA = Rolls Royce Associates David

David,
you are correct in thinking that Foster Wheeler are one of the associates. Babcock and Wilcox are also a participant. The company has been running since 1954 and design and build the PWRs for the UK nuclear submarine fleet. Nick. |
