Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
Nobody so far has mentioned Belcom LS102 (10m) ....I have fixed some
And I have have seen a Belcom LS602 (6m version)... had a play with one I have never had a Belcom Liner Spew...some will know about those! ("popular" rig for 2m SSB in 1970s ) With luck this weekend the 10m Pye Cambridge TX will be tickled by the home brew VFO. The RX side seemed to work but it has a fast tuning sprog at 29.702 - ish. Out of the 10m band so who cares? Or else we want to know what this is and why...can we fix it? Last edited by Jon_G4MDC; 13th Dec 2018 at 7:36 pm. |

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
Another fairly rare and exotic 10m multimode mobile radio was the little Sommerkamp TS-788DX. It was known as the 'Coffee Warmer' because the high power PA section had a huge flat heatsink at the back. It was one of the more desirable 10/11m radios about 30 years ago. I had one for a few months back in the heyday of 10/11m but didn't get on with the fussy user interface.
I had a rummage to try and find the Uniden 2830 up in the loft. I failed but I did find a President Lincoln radio which is essentially the same radio although this one is the later model with the revised PA stage. I've also got a stash of the classic mk1 and mk2 Cobra 148GTL-DX radios, mostly mint and unmodified and still boxed. I also managed to find my original Cobra 148GTL-DX mk2 I bought back in about 1982. I modified this one to also cover the 10m band and used it a lot in my student days as a transverter driver for 2m and 70cms. The Uniden 2830 10m radio is definitely somewhere in the house but I haven't seen it for years.

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
I don't think its been out of the box.
Theres some writing on the outer box "doesnt require PAT testing" which may infer it was bought by an organisation and stashed, who knows. Will keep it standard I think. Oh and did someone mention Belcom. Labour of love. bought cheaply off ebay with a promise to bring it back to its former condition. the spaghetti was to add another display digit, who knows why ? Its nearly finished on receive, but transmit needs going through. Ive added Leds and a wavechange switch so it will do 11 and 10. Also picked my Tennamast up on Friday. bloke in the bungalow at the back had complained to the planning about my vertical CB antenna, so I guessed if I was being driven down the planning approval route I may as well do it properly, and give him some better scenery to look at, it will look superb with a rotator and a few beams on top |

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
I think I owned a Stalker 9 that was modified for 10m back in the day , had a piggyback board installed as I recall .
Long time ago now so cant be sure , but the rig itself was a lovely piece of equipment. |

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
I had another rummage in the loft for the Uniden 2830 today and I still can't find it but I did find an old Major M588 multimode CB that had been converted to 10m by Spectrum Communications. I've never tested this radio on air but I presume it can cover all of the 10m band.
Back in the day, these old 'Cybernet 059 board' AM/FM/SSB radios had a fairly good reputation on the CB bands but were always seen as the poor man's Cobra 148. It is a very good looking radio but I don't think I'd recommend one of these as a serious 10m radio as they are fairly grim from a technical point of view. They also tune in 10kHz channel steps and only have a RIT/Clarifier control for SSB. So for 10m use the RIT has to be converted to tune for both Tx and Rx and the range extended to cover +/-5kHz. The FM modulation is achieved by modulating a crystal and this means these radios sound poor on FM Tx. They can be modified to change how the FM is done but my general advice would be to avoid anything made by Cybernet if you want to convert a CB to 10m.

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
Update. Have emailed Bury Radio Society regarding the "feedback " article. Its a long shot but always worth an ask if they still have a copy archived away somewhere.

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
Hopefully they have copies of both of the special issues of Feedback. They would definitely be worth preserving.
By search I found https://sites.google.com/site/nickb3332/10fmcircuits which has Nick's modification details for the Icom ICB1050 as well as a block diagram and schematic.. That got me searching AmericanRadioHistory.com for articles from Short Wave Magazine. I then pulled out my paper copies. I found: 1983/02 H. Allison, G3XSE, Converting the Icom ICB1050 Transceiver to Ten-Metres FM, p. 656, and correction 1983/03 p. 28 1983/04 P. Osbourne, G4RPF, "Repeater Shift for the Icom ICB1050 after Conversion to 10-Metre Operation", pp. 88-89 1983/06, S. Ibbs, G4LBW, Further Modifications to the Icom ICB1050, pp 194-195, and note 1983/08 p. 318 1983/08, S. Ibbs, G4LBW, Display Modifications for 10-Metre Rigs", pp. 316-318 1984/03 H. Allison, G3XSE, How to Convert "Unconvertible" Rigs to Work on the Ten-Metre Band, pp. 18-19 1984/11, S. Ibbs, G4LBW, Icom ICB1050 Conversion Update, pp 408-410 1984/12, S. Ibbs, G4LBW, Icom ICB1050 Scanner, pp 465-467 I have not found the modification article by G4MKT mentioned by G4LBW in his 1983/08 article. HTH and 73 John BTW has anybody contacted G3VNQ/NM9J to see if he has copies of those special editions of "Feedback"? If he does not, he has a superb memory to remember the titles of the articles over 30 years later. Last edited by John KC0G; 3rd Apr 2019 at 5:03 pm. Reason: New info |

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
Interesting how this one has come alive again.
It has been a while! It has turned up some good stuff about CB conversions - even if that was not the original question. As the OP I have concluded that the Si5351 is not a good replacement for the crystals in a Pye Cambridge - or much else. I am not going on the air with that pending a lot more testing. My opinion is - total junk. Others may disagree but that can be a new thread. This thread has run it's course for me - question unanswered. If Mods would like to close - that would be fine. I knew I hadn't thrown it away. I've also got it scanned at work but it's too large a file to upload. I can do it a few pages at once now though.

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
I've just noticed that 11m is quite lively even at this hour (20:30 on 11/07/19 as I write this) and there are a few SSB stations between 28.400 and 28.500 on 10m - hearing nothing on 10FM calling frequency of 29.600 FM but that's doesn't mean the band is not open.

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
21:42 (11/07/19), EI4L, the only station I've heard in just over one hour of monitoring 10FM, just came up out of the noise while calling CQ but unfortunately vanished back into it again before he had even finished calling. I did put out a few calls and also tried to go back to that station as well, but nothing biting.

Re: 10M FM - any activity these days?
Two strong stations an hour ago, one in N.Spain talking to an Irish station and a French station speaking to a G7 call. Very strong signals, just a little QSB.
