Getting back on-topic, are there any Maplin shops still open? Orpington has closed (passed it today). |

Re: Maplin stores
Someone has edited the Wikipedia entry (I think yesterday) to say that all stores have closed.

Re: Maplin stores
A member of staff told me that the last 10 shops closed today. I visited Chesterfield branch and was handed a carrier bag on entry by the Administrator’s representative and told to fill it full for a pound. Nothing very exciting left, mainly audio and video cables. Still managed to fill a few bags though.
Thanks and Goodbye Maplin, we will never see your like again. Peter |

Re: Maplin stores
A suitable epitaph. Mixed emotions expressed here, but undoubtedly a sad loss to many.

Re: Maplin stores
If you sign up to the mailing list (as I just did), Mailchimp gives the address as:
Maplin Online Ltd Huckletree West Mediaworks 191 Wood Lane London W12 7FP United Kingdom ... which is a co-working space address. https://www.huckletree.com/contact Most likely the name has been sold to an eCommerce company and that, apart from the name, there is no connection at all with the former Maplin company. The same happened after Woolworths closed, the name was bought and used by an unrelated eCommerce company for a few years. |

Re: Maplin stores
"whois maplin.ac.uk" doesn't really give any further clues, except the date the domain's data was last changed:
Relevant dates: Registered on: before Aug-1996 Expiry date: 16-Feb-2019 Last updated: 02-Jul-2018 is interesting: from memory the last of the bricks-and-mortar stores closed some time around the end of the 3rd week in June. |

Re: Maplin stores
I bought a laptop from them a fair number of years ago and everything seemed to go OK. With their Huddersfield base, I had the contacts in the town to be able to ask if they were a real bricks and mortar firm.

Maplin appear to be rising from the dead again
New web site: https://www.maplin.co.uk/
Apparently Peter Jones bought the trademark and web site: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/0...en_maplins_ip/ So place your bets; what are we going to get served under the brand? |

Re: Maplin stores
Peter Jones also bought Jessops photographic shops after that business collapsed in 2013. Some Jessops outlets, including our local Cambridge shop, have remained open and there's a strong online presence.

Re: Maplin stores
Other areas of the country which once had Jessops sprinkled around have seen nothing return. With Jessops being bought after collapse there was no requirement for the new firm of the old name to honour gift vouchers from the old one. Some people had been collecting vouchers as Christmas etc presents towards some quite large purchases and got rather voiciferous when a company by the same name arose from the ashes.
Following the Jessops pattern, I'd expect the name to be used mostly as an internet trader with maybe a small number of physical outlets in areas of high population density and wealth. I don't think Maplin had anything like Jessop's exposure in gift vouchers. I made a mental not to never have any shop-based gift vouchers.... David

Re: Maplin stores
Photo printing is on the way out as well what with mail order print farms these days. Seems like Peter Jones is on the tail end of the markets.
I will eat my hat if Maplin doesn't just resurface exactly as it was minus electronic components and disco equipment and plus slightly more consumer electronics like television, audio etc. I want my futuristic Maplin space ships on catalogues and Z80s again. Bah humbug. |

Re: Maplin stores
I gather that after its chain of shops failed, Tandy reappeared as a legacy web-based operation.
They still exist - https://www.tandyonline.com/ And will sell you a 12AX7/ECC83 valve for £9.99 or a 6L6 for £15.99 !! I guess there may be a niche..... though I'll not be betting my pension on it. |

Re: Maplin stores
Email from Maplin this morning saying the new store is now online at https://www.maplin.co.uk/
Seems to be a very limited selection at the moment, loads of sections but not many products in each. As we all know (post #632) this is nothing to do with the previous Maplin, it's just an online company who have bought the name. |
