Another DC Avominor Type HR has come out of the woodwork, s/n 338-39.
(Meter 338 from March 1939) The gold leaf legend on the box is in very good condition judging by the photos.

This makes 11 known extant examples, the earliest August 1938, the latest January 1941.

When less were known they fetched more money from the enlightened, but i'm rather happy that we're getting more examples coming up, and also people are willing to disclose serial numbers. With 338-39 i advised the seller how to damp the movement, so it should have arrived at it's new home with no further deterioration. Where that home is; i have no idea.

I have two, AVO 8 mk3, both bought on Ebay a few years back from U.K. sellers. The younger one arrived with a defective meter movement so I bought another and with much better luck that time. The serial numbers are 5591.1164 and 72598. 168.

Good morning all on this last day of 2023.

Today I took delivery of a Protimeter Moisture Meter (serial 137-856 [August 1956]). I know these have been discussed on the forum, as they utilise the Universal Avominor enclosure; although not an Avometer, there is interest there.
A nice addition to the collection.

I hope you all have a great new year and prosperous 2024.

Don't think I have ever seen one of those before. Thank you for posting the details and pics.

Interestingly, there is another on Ebay at the moment.
But I don't need two!

Thanks Andy. As previously mentioned the damp probe as supplied with the meter has prongs that are supposed to be around 15mm apart, according to an ebay vendor i contacted.

(Mine is missing the special probe..)

I have digital DA114 s/n 1048, a Nixie tube jobbie. Had this from new and still have the manual.

I have just replaced a dozen ERIE 30V 0.1MFD capacitors, a while back the decimal points that were supposed to be off were glowing slightly, this was caused by said capacitors, the worst was reading about 2M and the ‘best’ one only about 10M. Only other problem was the main IC a MC902 that failed early in it’s life, they sent me a ceramic looking replacement.

I have just bought another Avometer 8, this time a lovely condition (like new and little used) Mk.7. It was a real bargain at just £75. My current Avo 8 Mk6 sits in my French house and when I needed a meter last week to try and resurrect an old large format slide viewer, my Metex digital meter, which has had a dodgy power switch for years, completely died, with the switch self-disassembling.

My new to me Avo 8Mk7 came from a man who was an engineer, so apparently all tested before dispatch. As promised and unlike my previous Avometer purchases, a very dead Model 7 and Model 8 Mk.6 which had dead diodes, faulty solder joints and broken connections on the AC side, this one works perfectly. It does not have a case unfortunately and given my past experiences with AVOmeter and Megger cases smelling like a dead badger, I am reluctant to buy a second hand case. I may get a friend to make me a wooden box, as my woodworking skills are negative.

The original Avo test leads were missing the probes but I have found a new old stock set and bought them. However I am not a huge fan of these leads with the very long probes due to my arthritic tremor (worse since covid) and have bought from Amazon, a set of AMTOVL leads. These seem excellent quality and come with a large range of accessories from micro clip probes to large crocodile clamps and others plus a set of 8 different tips for the standard probes from near wholly shielded to around 2 cm exposed, in both plated and brass. The insulation is not quite as thick as the original rubber covered Avo leads but is CatIII graded to 1000V and a lot thicker than some leads I have seen. I can recommend them. I did have to remove the shields from the connection banana plugs but the plugs are a good tight fit in the meter.

The Mk.7 has labels on the side with "1067 M098299 8MK7/RS 000326" written on them. They look like factory labels. It was originally sold by RS Components whose logo is on the battery cover.

Hi there.

Just thought I would add my two AVO 8's to the rather extensive list.

1) AVO 8 Mk5, S/N 02521 8V/11/79 recently acquired and in very good condition.

2) AVO 8 Mk4, S/N 00095-84/570 the first 4 digits are difficult to read so maybe incorrect, no S/N on the scale just the casing.

Cheers,

Joe.
