Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
The licences were initially just for Marconi Company patents and they proposed a royalty of 10% of the wholesale selling price of all receivers manufactured that employed Marconi patents.
By the end of 1922 six large manufacturers agreed to a royalty of 12/6 per valve holder on every set. This became the A2 licence in 1923. In 1924 Marconis stated that they would not enforce this for home constructors because of the complications involved. In 1929 a new licence the A3 covered patents of MWT, BTH and The Gramophone Co. At that time the royalty rate was reduced from 12/6 to 5/- per valve holder but licencees had to sign up for this from August 1929 for a further five years. Later, more companies joined the patent pool. |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Hi Peter
Thanks for the useful information, before I add it into my spread sheet and upload it here, I wonder if you could please show the source of your facts. We have already seen in Wireless-World-1929-07-P106 that the A3 licence covered periods August 28th, 1928, to August 28th, 1933. Thanks Mike |

Since I purchased this set a few years ago, it was put in storage so hadn't really found the time to check it over. The set is thick with dust but there are no signs of any internal labels to give any indication where the set was made. An obvious clue is the tuning scale and it seems it was intended for the French or maybe Belgian market. There's a European style 2-pin plug attached to the mains lead. It would seem this set was brought into Britain from the continent but it's difficult to know when that occured. It's a novel set, there's no chassis as such, the circuitry is built around the valves located throughout the cabinet. It looks a great project when I can find the time. I'll start a new thread when I can start work on this set. Attached are a few pics. Regards Symon. |

Hi Symon
Definitely a foreign set then, I will leave it off my database in that case. It sort of looks like the inside of a hand wired TV. Mike |

Hi Mike,
I got that information from R.W. Burns "British Television The formative years" You can see some of the pages here: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=...page&q&f=false Peter Last edited by Station X; 12th Apr 2018 at 10:35 am. Reason: Link fixed. |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Just had a look inside some of my sets:-
Cossor Melody Maker 501AC - A6 Ferranti U1003 - A7-S Bush DAC90A - A7-S My very early, black DAC90 (dated August 1946) says 'This plate is issued by or with the authority of E.M.I., The G.E.C., The Gramophone Company, The Marconi Company, Murphy Radio and Philips. N.B - - A Post Office license is necessary.' No 'A' letters or numbers here. My Philco 333 & Philco 444 state number of valves used & 'for private use only, no public or commercial or financial gain.' Mentions the usual companies plus Halstat(?) Mark |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Hi Mark.
I was wondering about the license plate on the Bush DAC90A. I have a few of these sets but the two sets that I checked a few days ago showed no sign of a plate. On your set, where is the plate located? Regards Symon. |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Hi Symon,
Of the 5 sets I now have, only one retains its license plate. My cream set has the remains of old glue, as do two of my brown ones, one set shows no signs of ever having a license plate. With the back removed & peering in, the license plate is mounted on the right-hand side of the cabinet, top of the license plate approximately level with the top of the dropper resistor. I guess the heat from the dropper degrades the adhesive, the license plate drops off & falls out of the cabinet when the sets are moved. The set which still retains its license plate was owned from new by a couple who used the set only occasionally. It still has its original green calibration sticker on the back of the lamp reflector, which came in very handy when recreating one for the very poorly set I'm currently re-working. Best regards, Mark |

Hi Mike,
Although there is no reference to the licence numbers "The Setmakers" has quite a lot of history on the various changes to the licence. Peter |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
An A7-T plate is just about visible inside a Baird P2214 TV posted by "PsychMan" in post#14 in this thread:
https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=145656 The plates are occasionally visible in photos of items offered for sale/auction if anyone wants to research it that way.

Attached is a closer view of the SEM SBR sticker. The third digit is not clear, I was thinking it's possibly a 6 or 8. So it's either 25601490 or 25801490. I could not find any internal "Type no" labels in this set so no further clues unfortunately. Regards Symon |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Thanks! The code number for the license plate is a standard Dutch/Belgian code number, which makes sense since it was printed for the Belgian market so it was designed there as well. I was hoping it would have been drawn in the country of origin of the set, in which case it would have had a code number belonging to that factory.
The paper type label is something I've never seen before. Probably a cost cutting measure. On metal type plates, there often is an origin letter in front of the serial number. The only thing resembling an origin letter is the S, elsewhere on the label. This would point to Suresnes, France which is entirely plausible for this model. In any case, it is indeed foreign made. |

Re: Royalty has been paid on this apparatus...
Hi Mike
Yes, I feel a right berk giving that number, another one of my off days when the brain isn't working properly. I noticed the prominent number inside the cabinet which I wrongly took to be the model number. I can't find any model designation only a serial number. Attached are a few pics of the set and I'm sure it will be identified. EDIT: As a guess could it be a Model 'N'? Best regards Symon Last edited by Philips210; 23rd Apr 2018 at 3:38 pm. Reason: typo |
