Default Wharfedale Super Linton

Sounds like a stupid question, but how do get inside one of these?
The back does not have any screws and appears to be glued on and the speakers are fixed to the front from the inside.

Thanks
Trevor

Gently pull off the front mounted grille?

It looks like the back originally had screws.

Cheers,

I got into a pair of these a while ago - pretty sure it's a screwed back. Maybe the screw heads have been filled and painted over - pic might help.

I think Edward is right, and the front grille just pulls off. You remove the woofer to get inside.

The 'Linton' name was used for a wide range of designs over many years.

Dad had the ones in GJ's photo,bought c 1970.

There were loads of x-head screws which were hard to remove as they didn't back out properly when turned.

The backs were very tight fitting, and a half-inserted screw, with sideways oblique pressure applied, bit well enough to start pulling the back out of its recess.

Thanks for all your replies.

I think someone has "got at them" at sometime, one has the back glued on and the other has the back nailed with the nail heads recessed, probably glued as well! I intend to dispose of them anyway and I just wanted to see if I could fix the scratchy woofers but I don't think I will bother.

Paul, the speakers are mounted from inside the cabinet so cannot be removed from the front.

The magnets on the woofers tend to shift, or it might be a case of the cones sagging. The tweeters are worth saving if nothing else.

Trevor

Should you feel you can help, have a word with "Sounlord80," in the Parts Wanted section. He says he needs some Linton 3xp tweeters.

The 3xp is a later design, and I don't think it used the same drivers.

If these are fitted with the purple tweeters, them things are rare.
Just a suggestion, if the OP plans to fully restore these to working order, it would be best to replace the crossover capacitor with a 6.8uF plastic film type, the old ones will be on borrowed time and it raises the crossover point by 1KHz, this will save the tweeters from having an early death!

Just to add to the knowledge base here, as I happen to have two pairs of "unmolested" Lintons on the bench at the moment..... Although the external appearance of the speaker cabinets is pretty much the same, the Linton 2 (with the purple tweeter) opens from the front, the back being recessed in a groove, while the Super Linton W30D opens from the back with cross-head screws.

(Ahhhhhh, I've been using the Linton 2 pair but the Super Lintons have been in storage for about ten years, sure they were working well at the time, but now I find that now one of my purple tweeters is silent)
