Boxing Day Quiz: two 1939 sets
Question 1: What is this set, shown with Arthur Askey and his family?
Question 2: In the other two pictures (from the 1940 film "Band Waggon" and the 1939 Radiolympia) is this the same 1939 Philips console? If so, what is the model number? Question 3: Do any pre-war Philips televisions survive today? I don't necessarily have all the answers! Steve |

Re: Boxing Day Quiz: two 1939 sets
Q1. Ekco TS701?
Q2. The speaker aperture in photo 2 looks wider than that in photo 3. Could photo 2 be Ekco TSC902 rather than the Philips 2407 in photo 3? Q3. Don't know. Peter |

Re: Boxing Day Quiz: two 1939 sets
Steve,
As far as I know, no complete Philips pre-war sets did survive. The 12" model was the 2415 (with a radio), and I think that was the only Philips 12" pre-war set. The set in picture 2 does not look like a Philips set. Jac |

Re: Boxing Day Quiz: two 1939 sets
I think both of you, Peter and Jac, are correct in what you say.
What up-to-date-looking sets those Philips were! They could almost have been from the early '50s. Are circuit details available? The cabinets looked slim for pre-war sets too... though could be an intentional trick of perspective. I wonder whether in fact there were large extensions at the rear? What a shame none survive. A closer look HERE. Steve |
