Default Cossor 479 AC/E

Hello to everyone, I have this Cossor 479 AC/E, that I am trying to bring back to life. I can't find any information about it, and it isn't included on Paul's DVD of radio manuals. I have looked at the Cossor 474 manual, but it is not the same radio. This radio has 5 valves, plus 'Magic Eye' and Rectifier valve. The Power Unit is separate from the rest of the chassis. I can't take a photo, because the radio is presently in pieces. The valves are mostly the worse for wear, with loose bases, and 'Top Caps'. When I attach Signal Generator to Grid of V1, a faint noise emanates from the speaker. I was wondering if any of the Forum members would have a circuit diagram or manual that I could buy. Thanks in advance, and all the best. John.

That's a beast, I assume the push buttons control the band selection? Looks a rare-ish set.

I have volume 1 of Radio and Television and it lists the 480 version, but never mentions the 479.
It's only a two pages so could easily be sent to you.

Have a word with Mike Izycky who posted the set on Radiomuseum.
You can PM him on the Golbourne forum or the vintage radio-TV forum as Cathovisor where he is a member.
Nice export set, another left hander.
The radio looks to be the same valve lineup as many Cossor sets of the period with the obvious tuning differences and the output valve, the eye could be difficult to replace though.

You could try Alan and Allena of Shopathome, the have a vast collection of manuals for sets like this.

This is an Export model although they do turn up surprisingly often.

It's closest domestic model is the 474AC

I have most of the Cossor Service information with the exception of export models.

The major differences between the 474 and the 479 are.

479 has an RF stage
479 has magic eye.
479 has more powerful output stage 6L6 474 has 6V6
479 has more wavebands.

You might find the 474 is close enough in most areas to help you along.

Cheers

I had one of these and never found exactly correct service information for it. As Cobaltblue states, the 474AC is close enough to get started.

Hello to everyone, and thanks for replies and information. As I already have the manufacturers manual (from Paul Stenning DVD) for the 474 AC, I'll try to make do with that for now. Thanks again. All the best. John.

Hi,
I have one of these sets which I obtained a few years ago. If you look at the kink below you will see that it was sold in Singapore in 1948 so i guess it was made for Empire Countries.

It might be worth contacting the Historical Radio Society of Australia to see if anyone there has any information as I would assume they were sold there as well.

Regards
Trevor.

Hello to all. Thanks Trevor (Trifocaltrev). I looked at the advertisement on 'The Singapore Free Press'. Exactly the same as the one I have. I am waiting for a 6L6 presently, which should be here on Wednesday. All the best. John.

Thanks for reopening this thread Bill.

I now have the Manufacturers Service information for this model at last so can make available in a short while.

Cheers
