That looks like it has been reused for an FM radio.
How about a short wave TV aerial?

michamoo,

Pointing north in Cambridge implies the channel B5, BBC, Peterborough TX (horiz pol). however there is nothing in Band III horiz in that direction. Perhaps Sandy Heath, ITV, on B6 horiz was strong enough, and not ghosted enough (its in the wrong direction for the aerial), to be acceptable?

Michamoo,
The Band 3 aerial, I cannot tell from the photo but could it being used for DAB reception from Madingley?
The band 1 or is it small enough for Band 2 for VHF FM from Perterborough?

It is one of those very late VHF television aerials that is a Band 3 with two Band 1 elements across it. It is located off the Newmarket Road pointing away from the centre of town towards the A14 bypass. Whether it has been repurposed is anyones guess. Sorry for the quality of the picture but only had my ancient Nokia phone to hand.

Seen today in Gladstone Road Horsham just off Hurst Road. Probably a channel 3 & 11 from the I.O.W. J.

Great catch John. The UHF attachment suggests this was done for the addition of BBC 2 though the aerial might be a bit too modern to suggest this was done in the '60s but I could be wrong.

Seen in Framlingham (Suffolk) yesterday morning.

This Band I/III/IV-V system is at Bradlaugh Electrical Services in Fore Street (during my visit, the owners mentioned a significant claim to fame as being its use in a location shoot for 'The Detectorists' - as indeed were so many other places in/around Framlingham).

I would guess Tacolneston as being the service transmitter for the top two but not sure about that feeding the lower one - the bearing looks adrift for Mendlesham ... any thoughts/suggestions?

(edit: Google Earth indicates Mendlesham as being the most likely candidate; it's almost due west of Framlingham and a relatively short path profile. This is borne out furthermore by the three-element design indicating a plentiful service signal as having been available at the time)

Best wishes
Guy

Here are a number of 405 line aerials seen in Ruthin, North Wales in April of this year.

sexton_mallard. Picture no.3 looks like an Antiference Band III log-periodic - not many of them to be seen thse days, you've bagged a rarity there.

Nymrod12, a nice 3 el Band I - but the one that I would like to have in my hands is that 'square backed' early J-Beam UHF jobbie above it...

If memory serves me correctly, that type might have been the Jaybeam 'Parabeam' - ?
I've seen quite a few of them in the Framlingham area over the last couple of weeks.
Best wishes

Indeed Guy it is an early J-Beam (their name before Jaybeam) Parabeam. One of the distinctive features is the larger diameter material used for the slot-dipole and reflector than the later versions.

A box 10 channel 9 aerial just about holding on in Tooting High Street. The lower Tooting area was always a poor spot for reception. UHF was particularly bad with ghosting and poor signal.

Ref post 574
Where I use to live in a steep valley location just south of Bath our neighbour had one of these on the side of his house together with a 3 element band 1 aerial.
Considering we were in a well know local 405 line blackspot the aerial worked really well with good pictures on BBC1 from Wenvoe on ch5 and ITV from St Hilary on ch10.
What was even more amazing was the ch10 signal was on much reduced power after a fire at St Hilary meant that the ch10 signal was only radiating at 55Kw's ERP instead of the original 200Kw's ERP.

Propagation is a strange thing. Charmouth is in a deep valley and UHF reception from Stockland Hill was the exception rather than the rule. My aerial rigger went to a bungalow on a local farm and fitted a high gain beam to the chimney - nothing, and yet a set top aerial worked perfectly!

405 reception was quite good in most places even though the signal had to get over a hill probably 300-400' high, although ghosting could be a problem.

This is an interesting one spotted at HELLINGLY about two miles from Eastbourne.

A box 12 Band 3 with the final remains of what was a Band 1 'H'. Only the cross arm complete with insulator remain. It's a bit odd due to the Band 1 being 45 degrees to the Band 3, not co sited.

I can't work out what transmitters it was receiving and I don't think it has rotated with age. John.

Presumably the small UHF aerial is looking at Heathfield..The band 3 aerial could well
have been on Dover Ch10.
Band 1 possibly was for the Eastbourne
Ch5 relay which was vertically polarised,
used to get out well over a lot of East Sussex.
If not it's for Crystal Palace, which would
be more or less in the same direction as Heathfield from there.

We used to pick up Southern from Dover at our old home near Sevenoaks, if fact we tended to watch it rather than Crystal Palace.
