http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...32/olly037.jpg http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...32/olly042.jpg http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/m...32/olly044.jpg Hi all, Im afraid i got off to a bit of a bad start with my last posting , I was very Naive . I picked up this set today at the local carboot sale , I dont intend to sell it and i am not asking for info as to what its worth . I love all things antique and i appreciate the fact that all of you on this forum are very dedicated to all things Radio , and that is pricelesss. I bought this for £20.00 with another £10.00 to pay when the guy gives me the bit that is missing on the front of the case , Its in his loft 'Inside a gramaphone horn ' he said . I fell in love with the quality of the case , Its very well made indeed , The Radio is a wonderful piece of furniture . The back appears to be locked so i will need to have a look for a key , Im sure i have one that will fit . Now because i like this item so much im thinking of spending some of my hard earned cash on having this restored . I believe i will be ok restoring the case , but the Radio ' I dont think i will attempt it . I have had a look online and there is only limited info on the mcmichael set , However i managed to date it between 1928 to 1930 . Im afraid thats the only info i have regarding this radio. Your views will be very welcome . Many thanks Andy |

Re: mcmichael super screen portable four 1928 ?
Hi Andy, the radio itself has a quite simple circuit and can be easily restored; defects are often due to poor mechanical joints.
Valves of the vintage may be a problem, but there are modern equivalents that will get the set operating and are not expensive. I should work very well as a local station set. You will need a long wire aerial and a set of batteries. Ed |

Hi.
What an amazing set! In nearly new condition and I bet it works once connected up. These Battery operated sets are very reliable. Cheers Trevor

Re: mcmichael super screen portable four 1928 ?
Thank you , Do you know if it is possible to find battery's for this model ?
Oh and although I am awaiting the piece thats missing from the front, I dont have a clue what to expect , What will it be ? Will it be a lions head or maybe a plaque with the model maybe ? I dont have a clue . Thanks once again to all of you. Andy. |

Re: mcmichael super screen portable four 1928 ?
Hi, absolutely great, Josh is not the only one that is drooling, I have a later portable that has many similarities but looks like a leather suitcase. Having 3 McMichaels pre 1934 then the only thing I have found to watch out for are the tin boxed capacitors, Hydra etc. all of mine with out fail had failed with the cases literally 'exploded' with the wax expanding and splitting the seams. Very simple to remove the contents and re stuff with modern capacitors. You will probably have a PM12 valve in it, they are a bit like hens teeth but PM me because I have a number of spares that should sort things out if necessary.
They are terrific sets and work very well. Cheers. Geoff. |

Re: mcmichael super screen portable four 1928 ?
Hi all I am glad that you like it, I am always picking up sets and I normaly sell them on but I dont know what I will do with this one .
As simple as the contents look to work on , I still think it will be beyond me . I might wait for the missing front piece . 'whatever that is' and then see if someone who knows what they are doing can have a go at restoring it . Do you think that the batteries are available for this set ? can anyone date this set or does anyone have another the same as this ? Im at a loss as what to do with it . I would like to find the chassis No for Josh and his records but I dont know where it is . Many thanks for all your help Andy |

Re: mcmichael super screen portable four 1928 ?
Batteries will have to be made up , or a suitable eliminator for mains used , or you can actually buy modern electronic units that take modern batteries that will supply the correct voltages ,which then wil make it portable . They probably will only supply HT at around 100v but LT and GB will be easy to make with small low voltage modern batteries

Re: mcmichael super screen portable four 1928 ?
Josh has seen it, Josh is insanely jealous
This must be one of the earliest McMichaels left, I havent got anything this early and most of my McMichaels are in poor condition compared to this (for those who dont know I'm only 16 so I cant afford anything in good condition or this old ) You will have to build a power supply, I have two battery McMichaels (one a tabletop one and one a suitcase set) You are a very very lucky man Andy, especially finding it at a carboot sale! I would offer to repair it but I havent had any time for fixing radios recently so I have been slowly getting back into the habit of it, plus I wouldnt feel confident enough restoring such a beautiful radio. My plan has always been to restore all my postwar sets from other makers then when I have experience restore my pre-war sets then do all my McMichaels! Best of luck with it, If you ever want to sell it you know who to contact.... Josh. |
