Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
I am a novice and attempting to repair my 4302. I have cleaned up the goo from the melted belts and replaced the main belt. The rewind and fast forward seem to work but the play function doesn't as the right reel does not turn. Having read previous forums on different Philips models I reckoned it was something to do with the clutch so I took the thing apart. As can be seen from the photos, the rubber has melted here too. The clutch rubbers seem a strange shape (unlike on other models which appear to be round o rings).
Does anyone know what I can do next to sort it myself? Photo attached. Many thanks. |

Re: Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
Those clutches contain four rubber fingers so that they drive in one direction and not the other. They make a lot more goo than belts but are fixable.

Re: Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
Thanks - do you know if can I get replacements anywhere or will round o rings work perhaps?
Thanks again. |

Re: Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
I bought a blue one of those kits from my local flea market in Chesterfield on a Thursday.
The guy usually has a couple of them on his table at about the same price as in the link in post#6. |

Re: Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
All done and working well.
For the benefit of other novices who might be considering a similar project:- I cleaned the melted belts with a little Swarfega, Qtips and wipes. I finished off with isopropyl alcohol. The heads were cleaned only with the alcohol. The hardest part was attaching the belt on the clutch assembly to the top of the fan capstan. I don’t think it is clear to a novice that this needs to be done and the illustrations in the service manual online (in German) do not show this. I can’t pretend that I understand how or why the clutch works or what it actually does but it does work. To open up the clutch assembly it is necessary to remove the circlip at the bottom of the take up reel shaft. To do this I had to remove the motor and fan assembly. I actually removed three of the four bolts and moved it to one side. The real problem however was finding a way to pull the clutch belt from under the spool top and attach it to the capstan. To do this I had to re-position the capstan by fitting the motor back to its original position. I could only fit the belt over the capstan by making a small hook and pulling it down and over. It was very fiddly and tortuous, there must be a better way – I can’t believe it was designed that way. Still it worked eventually. All in all it was a challenge for a novice with no real technical savvy or experience but it was possible and very satisfying when it actually worked. I found this video very useful (albeit it showed a different model – the clutch seemed to be the same) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AndVoOon-xY Service manual obtained from - https://elektrotanya.com/philips_n-4.../download.html Thanks again for your help |

Re: Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
Nice one Dirk , glad you got it going ,
That video is awful...lol. ..Whilst he`s kinda doing it right you MUST get rid of all the "goo" because if you don`t it will attack the new belts . He had a lot more cleaning to do ...hahah . You can also get the manual from "Hifiengine" , a resource most of us use . Its brilliant and I recommend signing up (its free) |

Re: Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
When I did one I cut bits out of rubber sheeting. It was supplied with a set of replacement belts.
I have got an older valve model to try the "O" ring method on. |

Re: Philips reel to reel 4302 clutch
Be careful when using the o- rings, not to put too much drag on the spool. To check, put it in rewind - if it struggles, the TU spool is likely providing too much resistance and you'd need to remove o-ring(s) or use thinner one (s). Some trial and error is wise before reassembling the machine.
