Default Re: A quiz, old time colour codes.

I have met a colour code used specifically for theatre and event electrics, used to identify the length of cables.

Based LOOSELY on the resistor colour code.

1m=brown
10m=brown brown
100= brown brown brown

2m=red
20m=red red

25m=red green

50m=green

And so on. This scheme has the merit of not using black which would not show up on black power cables.
Grey which would not show well on grey data cables is little used since neither 8m nor 80m are common lengths.

Pink wires/Sleeves.
I remember that Pink Sleeves - Hellerman Sleeves - were in common use in the RAF back in the early 60's, and back into the 50's I guess. Along with Hellerman Pliers & Black marking ink.
In general, colour wise, in the post-war years , companies used whatever they had left over from the 30's &/or heaps of ex military wiring.

Time to publish the material I have.
From Wireless and Servicing Manual, W T Cocking.

Mains Transformer Colour Code.

Primary.
0V Black, 10V tap Black & Green, 210V tap Black & Yellow, 230V tap Black & Red, 250V tap Black & Brown.

Rectifier Heater.
Green and Green with Green & Yellow centre tap.

HT Red and Red with Red & Yellow centre tap.

Valve Heaters.
Brown and Brown with Brown & Yellow centre tap.

Additional LT.
Blue and Blue with Blue & Yellow centre tap.

I must try to follow this code next time I construct something.
Sam.

And now Colour Code for Battery Connections. Same source.

Highest HT+, +B max, Red
2nd highest HT+, +B int, Maroon & Red
3rd Highest HT+, +B det, Maroon
Negative HT, -B, Black with Red tracer
Positive LT, +A, Yellow
Negative LT, -A, Black with Yellow tracer
Positive GB, +C, Green
Maximum Negative GB, -C max, Black with Green tracer
2nd Negative GB, -C low, Black & Green
Loudspeaker High potential lead, Brown
Loudspeaker Low potential lead, Black with Brown tracer

Then there is the Loudspeaker Colour Codes.

Outside lead of output transformer Primary, Green
Inside lead Primary, Brown
Centre tap of Primary, Red
Outside of Secondary, White
Inside of Secondary, Maroon
Outside of 1st Field Winding, Yellow
Inside of 1st Field Winding, Black
Tap on 1st Field Winding, Grey
Outside of 2nd Field Winding, Grey
Inside of 2nd Field Winding, Blue

So there we are, lots of fairly useless information, but who knows, we may find a use for it.

Sam.
