Default Garrard AT-6 stereo cartridge, or whole headshell replacement?

Compatible types, please? It will be used as a stereo, with the other channel linked.

I've completed the power supply and amplifier restoration and sorted the intermediate wheel, so just this piece remains in the jigsaw!

Thank you

A thread title correction might cause less confusion for some, plus putting the post in the correct section of the forum.

AT6 is a Garrard model not BSR. We also need to know what amp or equipment the cart is to be used with. If a suitcase player, you would likely need a ceramic like a BSR SC12, but as I said we need more info.

Right..... A Dansette HiFi amplifier is quite respectable but will need a ceramic cartridge unless an extra preamp is fitted to go for a budget magnetic type (that's about as good as the AT6 will manage to track).

The "Chinese Cheapy" gives a reasonable account of itself for next to nothing if you make up your own mount to match the standard half inch of the AT6 headshell. Rather more if you manage to find one with mounting clip supplied.

A 9TAHC would have been good, but they're mostly dying of old age now. Don't know how the less wonderful 8T is faring.

Otherwise, the usual suspects. All getting hard to find/expensive compared with a budget magnetic plus preamp setup.

Ah, thanks for fixing the confusion, Bill. Typo rather than cognitive error

The headshell has four internal connectors for soldering, which protrude into the available space ... hence have doubts over the physical compatibility (size) of a ceramic candidate like the otherwise excellent if expensive BSR SC11M.

Anyone confirm if ok from the size viewpoint ?

Thank you

There's plenty of room for the SC11M, and the vast majority of other cartridges. Just make sure the cartridge comes with the mounting bracket.

The Chinese Cartridge cost me £2 and the Bracket cost £7! Funny old world.

I made my own bracket for a cheap Chinese cartridge using the ally strip from round the top of a wine bottle.

I know it has been mentioned before, but if you need to play 78s then this clone of the sc12 ought to be useful, and at about a third of the going price of the real deal. Again, no fitting kit but one can be made up as llama says.

Ben, this is listed as MM with an output of just 4mV.

Edward That is a ceramic cart. The people selling them put that MM spec on them all.
They are idiots.

Thanks for all your replies, I've been busy with family and other things and it took a while for the new cartridge to arrive.

I have sourced a new old stock SC11M with mounting bracket. The original cartridge had an integral method of flipping the stylus over to play LP's or 78's. This can't be preserved as the mech was riveted to the cartridge. It doesn't show as a deficiency of any kind, it's more for authenticity.

The SC11M I have sourced doesn't appear to have any output. I've cleaned up the verdigris from the push-fit copper connectors and tightened them up a bit, and I've also scraped the connectors on the SC11M.

This should be one of the most trivial things I've ever done in a whole restoration if the cartridge is working. Any ideas? It's a simple matter of an electrical connection if the cartridge is doing what it should be. Obviously I've done the simple test of checking for continuity to the amp input using the finger/hum method.

the finger / hum test you did was this touching the cartridge wires with the headshell in the arm?
are you connecting the cartridge using just 2 wires?
if so check you have connected the cartridge up correctly

It's very rare indeed for an SC11m to be faulty, I have to say!

Post a pic of your connections, please, Al.

And/or scope the output while you stroke the stylus.

That's reassuring - or is it! - thanks Nick! they're expensive little units, so I hope I don't have to start over

I'll ' scope it, may take me a day or two.
