Default Autovox 2682.

Hi All,

I recently got this set in Wexford, a 300 mile round trip but ok as I have family not far from were I collected it. They had unfortunately powered it up, but it showed a raster in the pictures online. When I got it up on the bench and powered up it was pumping straight away. My first thought was the tripler, I disconnected it's input from the lopt and she came up. I have wired in a tripler for now but I'm getting a slightly negative voltage on the A1's.

I've no manual so I'm shooting in the dark, though I haven't found anything obvious on the line out panel. I hope it's not the lopt. My friend John has jetted off to the States to visit his daughter so no help there. Any clues on this lads? I've put an ad in the wanted section for a diagram or any helpful service information.

Thanks,
John Joe.

Sold in large numbers through the Comet discount warehouses. Memory is fading now but I seem to recall problems with the audio output transistor, fitting an MJE340 sorted that out. They also came with a circuit diagram in with the customer instructions.

A nice find but who were Autovox, was it just a badge or a real manufacturer?

John.

They are/were Italian. Imported during the colour boom years.

Good and reliable but the few examples that were brought in for service had been badly attacked by woodworm on the sides and bottom. They were only a few years old so I suspect the wood was infested before the cabinet was assembled.

I see a nice mains filter cap and the on/off switches were one of the very few stock faults.

My mate worked for Comet at the time and I remember him telling me they had to clean up the dust before the customer discovered it...John.

I suspect you've wired in a tripler without the pulse diode - i.e. a 5-wire instead of a 6-wire. No information, I'm afraid, but I think that's where the problem lies.

Hello lads,

John, looking back through threads I read of the woodworm problem. My cabinet has a few a couple of ancient looking flight holes. I wonder if it was treated or if they're still waiting to take flight!

Glyn, you are ofcourse correct. The original tripler was a 5 wire and the one I put in was a 6 wire. What to do with that extra wire? Leave it out...doh! Maybe I should take up golf instead.

How did these compare with the like of the more common colour set of the time, say 3500, A823, 697 or G8? Were they a budget set or more expensive? They certainly look easy from a service point of view. Hard to believe it, but the convergence is almost spot on.

I have scooped out the old tripler with a few to perhaps rebuilding it. More later, got to rush off to work now.

Thanks again Gentlemen,
John Joe

Regarding the tripler - you can leave the extra wire out, but some circuits required you to connect it to the input pin. If it works left off, then that's the best bet!
These were sold via Comet and were quite competitively priced. They compare well with the other imports of the period, and had the advantage of a transistor (as opposed to thyristor) line output stage so were easier to service.
Perhaps not a good idea to compare it with the 697, though....

There are two 697's here, one with the flimsy cabinet and one in a nice Dynatron frock. I'm not going to comment further.....😮

During my short, (and not very enjoyable) time at Comet (Sandiacre), I repaired quite a few of these sets. As has been said, the triplers were always a good candidate for failure.
Comet service issued a mod. sheet which gave simple instructions for increasing the video gain on the driver assembly on the tube base PCB of some models. It appears these sets were supplied not fully modified to PAL I standard, and required extra gain to fully drive the tube cathodes on PAL I signals. Tony.

Someone once told me that these sets were based on a Kuba chassis.

Interesting re Kuba, the only one I had heard of was the Florence but that was a hybrid. Well two valves anyway.

Kuba did have an interesting history with Italy (CGE/Imperial which remained open and had their own models after the closure of Kuba in 1972 - however it seems to have been part of Telefunken by then, not clear whether Telefunken pulled back and if so: when), but I think Autovox mostly developed and manufactured their own chassis.

It could still be that in this particular set a bought in chassis was used, in that case possibly from Imperial. Some more comparison with other models needed (I can see distinctive module designations on the silkscreen, that would be a good starting point).

Autovox is an old italian company.
An italian TV collector told me, that they were founded by/by the wish
of Benito Mussolini!
I have no source for that.

They started in the 30s with car radio production.
Autovox produced TV sets for the export, too.
I have a few TV sets from that company.
In 1956 they started to sell TVs to Spain.
Later, at the end of the 50s, Marconi Espanola S.A. produced the
Autovox TV sets in licence.
Autovox is one of a few companies not founded at Milan or Torino,
but at Rome.
The headquarter of the italian electronics industry was always Milan.

German Dalek

Yes, Kuba was for a while a part of Telefunken.
Just that was told me by an old TV repair man in the 70s.
And it is true, I was able to ask for a schematic by writung to Telefunken.

But Kuba nether used Telefunken chassis in radios or TV sets.
However, the story is much longer, Imperial, Kuba @ General Electric....

German Dalek

I'd always wondered why Kuba used the name Florence on their imported 26" hybrid TV - perhaps it's their association with Italy. The only other Kuba I've ever seen was the 11" Porta-color. The 26" was a pretty good TV, the small one less so.
