Default Fake and remarked chips

An interesting video on the Chinese fake chip and remarking industry. They also salvage chips from old boards, sometimes not with the greatest care !

I used to work for a company that manufactured high end studio quality TV encoders/decoders/multi-stream multiplexers which used a microcontroller called COLDFIRE (32-bit MCU). At the time they were very pricey & our buyers were looking for the best price as they would. They announced they'd found some for about half the going rate & were very pleased with themselves until they were used in anger. Dead as a do-do, when we X-rayed them we found nothing inside them at all, just the lead frame & a void where the chip should have been. Needless to say the vendor couldn't be located & the money had disappeared! That was maybe 10-15 years ago.

Not much chance of electrostatic protection then. That makes interesting viewing, thank you.
