Default Re: Noise floor on AM band Vs. micropower AM modulator?

Quick update: we turned off the halogen strip lights in the dining room/ kitchen today and noticed a big drop in noise at the lower end of the medium wave band , on an 81 year old set with a 2 metre aerial .We then switch off the overhead lights (new regs. compliant) and noticed an even larger drop... so in my case, a new build flat, these sources alone account for most of the noise nuisance on medium wave.

Ha! A revelation, eh? Now all you need to do is get your neighbours to do the same. And their plasma tellies and assorted wall-wartery. And having your MF receiver next to your ADSL router doesn't help matters either.

It was ever thus, but perhaps not to the same extent. In the 1920s the wireless-owning residents of Workington (Cumberland) complained bitterly about interference from the Lodge-Cottrell electrostatic dust-catchers on the blast-furnaces at the local ironworks!
