well heres a update i did not finish it on time but never mind it was a bit daft of me being new to restoration what the hell at last,, it now works well. having had probs with the smoothing of the mains,,,thanks to les for pointing out my short comings reading the diagram top man,,, it should have two 8uf 450v that was a bit low so after a bit of trial and error i came to 4000uf and no mains hum not even a ripple on the scope left the 8uf in the smoothed side of the ht and changed the 8uf on the unsmoothed side. must get around now to puting up a long wire. mw is ok just very noisy it picks up all the power supplies in the house maybe the out side wire will stop that. but what a nice sound, lw is deaf just one or two stations think it needs seting up will do that this week when i get dads sig gen. still have not got the u14 tube should get one at blackpool next month. i think at some point i will redo the case i am not to happy with it. fun bits restuffing the caps twice many a burnt finger with the tar thats in the old ones ((is there any reson we dont use tar when restuffing caps ?))finding out that the pointer bit on top grounds the tuneing cap unless you fit a bit of rubber inbetween also dont forget to take resisters out of circuit for testing.. i will post a new video of it soon and put some photos on here. ,,,,if you would like to make any comments ples do,,,,

I don't know what others think but apart from a high quality restoration Mr Rave comes across as a TV natural on You Tube. Everything easily and amusingly explained! Proper Manchester lad and possible ex member of New Order or similar. Extraordinarily good job if he didn't know a tuning coil from an aerial. I even like the fact that the first post seems to have been edited for being "too" literate! Surely this was just following the Chas Miller/Reverend Dobbs tradition. Where was this skip by the way? Was that a single Damascus moment on the road to Vintage Radio? I recall that somebody had once found an Ultra Console [of the same age] in a skip down in Ardwick, while collecting his wife from work. Great stuff. Dave W

Hi Dave, you wont get away with 4000uF as a reservoir capacitor using a valve rectifier . A U14 has a top limit of 32uF.
