Brilliant, just to confirm things are OK can you post voltage readings from chassis to:
Blue
White
Red
150 ohm resistor/-ve of caps

Will do asap
I am amazed at the reception - Droitwich to Limoges loud and clear, plus the short wave.
And of course the magic eye...
Thanks

That good reception will be down to the sensitivity improvement from the front end RF amplifier stage before the mixer.

Obviously that capacitor (not "That Capacitor", if anything even worse positioned for high leakage failure consequences) ate the mains transformer but luckily not the output one as well. A much safer position for it is across the output TX primary where its failure will simply reduce output without affecting HT current much, if at all. Its effect on tone is much the same there since HT+ is ground as far as AC signal is concerned anyway.

You'll fix a "Superinductance" yet!

to keep it French:

RED 274v
WHITE 345v
BLUE 258v

over 150 ohm cap 10v

Sounds good whatever!
Thanks

Total current = 67mA which sounds fine and the HT and anode voltages look right. These values also indicate the EL84 is in good condition (a weak EL84 would result in high HT and anode voltages particularly in designs using the field coil as a choke).

Thanks PJL

Two LAST questions (honest!).

the 0.01µf 1kv - can it remain there or should I replace with a 0.02µf? It sounds fine.

The other slightly larger similar looking cap to the left of the transformer (0.1M from another valve to chassis) - what voltage should this be? 1kv as well?

cheers

The other white capacitor looks as if it is decoupling for the IF HT. Anything 400V and above will do.

I would be inclined to fit a 0.02uF (or another 0.01uF in parallel). Although they are called tone correction capacitors, the other far more important role is to suppress flyback transients from the transformer which might zap the transformer insulation.

Out of curiosity, what was the working voltage of the faulty capacitor? It looks as if it was a previous replacement.

I struggled to see "20000" marked on it, let alone anything else, so no idea I'm afraid.
Understood re replacing the replacement to get to the correct value.
Thanks

That nice bright EM34 is a bit of good luck. If you plan on using the set regularly, it may be worth arranging something to switch it off to preserve its phosphor screen.

Casual intermittent use/showing off only I think...

By the way I've found a proper 'old' shop in Limoges, Centre Electronique du Limousin, who have boxes and boxes of caps, resistors etc. No stopping me now...

Sorry to dig this one up again...
Just brought it in from the barn to where it had been exiled over Christmas, plugged it in and nothing but a tranny hum. Tried a couple of times and found the tranny getting hot. Fearing the worst I fired it up with a dim bulb and all was well. Plugged in normally and it works fine.
Cold , damp, maybe??
