I need to look, I am using an iPod with Tunin radio application. I will start the computer and have a look.

I also use Tunein and others via my iPad, wireless of course from the router, then bluetooth to computer speakers on top of kitchen units so I can listen while I cook.

Yes, many of us will have our own local listening arrangements. Mine involves using an SSTran AMT3000 to relay the station from a PC in the workshop to the house (but no further). This will normally be Serenade Radio or Jones College Radio. In the house I can listen with various table sets or perhaps my Dynatron Ether Conqueror radiogram.

The trouble being, of course, whenever I try to listen... I soon give up!

Try VLC on your PC and set the buffer caches, input codecs/network to 60000 (60 secs) and the Stream output buffer to the same. That will buffer the stream for 60 secs.

Shoutcast stream address for Serenade Radio http://4534.cloudrad.io:8284/listen.pls

I could not increase the input greater than 60, the output may go higher I did not try. If you don't want to use VLC use a Internet radio streamer of you choice but increase the buffers on that one.

Frank
Edit. I could not find a way of changing the buffer of the link on the web page.

An encouraging start using VLC. No breaks... but when I went back to using Serenade's on-site player I got breaks almost immediately.

VLC doesn't seem to remember the 60-sec cache delay though, so it has to be set manually each time.

I'll keep experimenting. Thanks for the help.

The delay was set with mine, did you use the save button?
The VLC I used is on a Mac, the interface is possibly a bit different if you are using another OS.

I am not sure but I think the link I gave is direct from the shoutcast server, the one from the web page is some kind of redirect from Tunin Radio. I don't do how that works whether it is just a redirect or Tunein Radio serves the stream. There is always a possibility of breaks whatever system is used, hopefully VLC will give more reliable service.

Hi Frank.

I'm using a PC running Win XP. VLC Media Player 2.0.1. There was no option to 'save'. Just as 'Open Media' window... 'Network' tab... 'show more options... 'Caching' (in milliseconds). At least that's all I can find.

Having said that, it's Monday, and I've just been over to try Jones College Radio on their site http://jcr.jones.edu/index.php/the-music/ and the propagation this evening is excellent. If you have a direct stream URL for using VLC with them too, that would be great.

Try the preference settings, may be a different name in Windows, select "Show All" or a similar name and change/save from there.

Jones radio direct feed http://ice5.securenetsystems.net:80/WKTZ

Thanks for the tip. In VLC, I can now set 'stream output muxer caching' to 60000mS, which it now remembers. Simple 'caching' on 'Open Network Stream' always defaults to 1000mS though.

Having said that your URLs in VLC both seem to work better than using the on-site players. There are still gaps, but not so bad.

I thought the input buffer had to be set as well. I don't use VLC much as I normally stream from the iPod, so I learned something last night as well.
Hope it helps.

No not at all. This is using wifi from my broadband router connected to the phone. I have no contract just payg so streaming audio on 3/4G is impractical both on cost and I have to hold the phone out the window to get any signal if I'm lucky.
