Used my newly resurrected Philips 2020 machine today .
Next on the list to get going is another Philips 1702 unit. |

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
I have been brightening up this Sunday morning listening to Chas and Dave on home made speakers driven by a pair of trusty Mullard LP1162 modules that were found in some audio stuff I acquired in the 1980s that included valve amps that I still also use regularly.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
What is a Philips 2020? I googled it and came across a blender and an "all in one body groomer that trims and shaves all body zones exclusively for men"!

I'm told that male grooming is really catching on these days but what would I know. The VR2020 was streets ahead of its time too when compared to its VHS and Betamax counterparts.

Quote:
The tape was 1/2 inch wide but the format was 1/4 inch so you could flip it over and recorded on the other side like a Compact Cassette. the heads in the drum were mounted on piezo crystal mountings and the machine was able to correct tracking errors dynamically as each head traversed the track. I can't remember if a Hi-Fi alternative to linear audio track was implemented but I'm sure it would have been, had the format survived.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
When you wrote the word 'bagging', Martin, I thought for a moment you were talking about your actual lunch!
Here in Lancashire, 'bagging' is what we call a packed lunch. "It's baggin' time!", is the phrase often heard across the county (we don't pronounce the 'ing', of course!) I believe it's called 'snap' in Yorkshire.

Currently listening to my Philco 333, a bit of Jazz on a cold/wet evening.
Lights down low, incense on the go ... contemplating a tumbler and a drop of something warming, trouble is, it's a 'school' night, maybe a mug of hot chocolate instead. Mark

Today I used the Murphy A122c which I bought at Golborne to listen to a mixture of BBC radio 4 on long wave and 1940's music via a Minimod pantry transmitter.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Nearly every day, a 1975 Teasmade 855 to wake me up and make me tea, and a 1961 Ultra TR81 to play me music to wake my brain up as well. I've got plenty of other radios, but the Ultra is the best one for classical FM; the internal speaker is small, but it's a Celestion.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
I have a 60s Anglepoise lamp that I now use when I'm working on the bench I acquired when a building where I worked was about to be demolished. I used it for a few years before consigning it to the garage. Having seen how much they go for I had another look at it but unfortunately the cable had rotted. I found a source for a replacement cable that looked the part fitted it then discovered that the finely balanced mechanism is not suited to LED light bulbs as they are too heavy and the lamp shade cannot be held in the required position. However the filament types of LED lamps are much lighter and have a similar weight to an incandescent bulb and fitting one of these has allowed me to position it where I want with the advantage of consuming about 6W.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Sadly I scrapped a perfectly working VR2020 machine some years ago. Ho Hum.
Every day I listen to my KB FB10 (a nice green one) in my kitchen. It was a leaving present from my chums in BBC OBs and is a focal point in my kitchen. I also use an HP 3450B and an HP 8640B along with a dual 0-30V 5A bench power supply I made in 1986 almost daily. I used to have a Tek 7603 with the usual plugins in regular use until I forked out for a lovely Rhode+Schwarz (was Hameg) HMO3004 a couple of years ago. Ging |

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Tonight I used my 1955 Avo Mk III valve tester to test a batch of 1.4 volt battery valves (which I’d been meaning to do for ages). Some of the valves were good, but the majority were low gain and had to be binned.
The valve tester will be going to a new owner tomorrow as I hardly use it these days. I can still fall back on my trusty 1946 Weston Tube Checker which, whilst nowhere near as good as the Avo, will check most valves and takes up a lot less space.

Nice, you don't see the console version of the A122 much these days.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
I hadn't really thought of it until now but I suppose our 1980 Creda Cavalier cooker which is in daily use and has been for nearly 40 years counts as vintage in many people's eyes. The Hoover 652 would count as well, although I can't help wishing it was a 652A with the switch within the body so it does not knock the paintwork around so much.
