AKAI GX-4000D Missing Capstan?
Hello all, there is a AKAI GX-4000D advertised but it says its missing its capstan? Is it possible to be missing it or does it sound more like the capstan sleeve? Just asking for future reference. I have included the picture

Re: AKAI GX-4000D Missing Capstan?
The capstan is there but it looks like the sleeve for 7.5 ips is not fitted.
The sleeve was recommended to be stored on a post under the head cover when the capstan was configured for 3.75 ips according to the user manual. Lawrence. |

The first picture shows the sleeve and knurled nut, the second shows where they are stored.
Not everyone selling these realizes the sleeve is stored, so ask for a good closeup of the recorder with the head cover removed, you might be in luck,! Hope this helps.

Re: AKAI GX-4000D Missing Capstan?
That's interesting. I've seen pictures of the 4000 several times but never realized the sleeve was to be stored under the head cover. I wonder why a more freely accessible post was not used, it's cumbersome as it is to change the speed on this machine so why make it more difficult than it has to be.

The storage post was out in the open in the non-GX versions, the 4000D and 4000DS

Re: AKAI GX-4000D Missing Capstan?
As most users would probably only use 1 speed anyway it was a cheap way to provide 2 speeds on a recorder.

Re: AKAI GX-4000D Missing Capstan?
Probably the worst weakness of the design, until the cams crumbled. Most examples I've tried have audible capstan frequency wow at 7 1/2 because of sloppy sleeve fit. The TC 377 was much better...
