Ooerr! Live chassis, very dodgy!
There was a very similar design in Practical Television, many years ago (but post 1966) that used a PL81 as the output pentode. It was called "The Teleamp". |

I see that the sign-off to the article is 'FGR'. I wonder whether that was the ubiquitous F G Rayer who entertained and informed so many of us with his designs published in Practical Wireless during the 1950s and 60s.

I guess making the chassis from wood was a nod to safety of sorts.

Regarding the live chassis.
As you are likely to be building from junk box components you could, provided you have a suitable transformer, use a 6V6 for the output valve and perhaps a 5v heater rectifier or silicon diodes. Then you would a nice boring isolated chassis. |

Nah. Use a heater dropper capacitor and hide an isolation amplifier for the input under the chassis!
