Default WYE smc-601 turntable not spinning

Hi. I’m new here. Recently inherited a WYE record player from my late Dad. He hadn’t used it for years and now I know why. The turntable doesn’t seem to be working. There is power as the radio part of the machine works and makes sound. If anyone could help with some tips for a complete beginner I’d be grateful. Thanks. Mark.

Post a picture of the record deck so we know what type it is.

It probably needs a stripdown and relube. If it's belt drive, the belt will need replacing. Wye stuff was usually pretty basic.

That's a late BSR deck. Probably NOT belt driven (though they made some very similar looking ones which were).

If you select "Phono" on the front and stroke the stylus gently, do you hear noises through the speakers? This will prove that the "cartridge" (which holds the stylus) is OK. It looks like a BSR SC12 or similar, and these are usually still fine even after 45 years or whatever.

If the platter doesn't rotate, then Paul will be right... it will be oil and grease that's gone sticky. Not a difficult job if you're mechanically-minded.

It’s now spinning but the sound quality is a bit rubbish. Sounds slightly slow. I’m using a modern record. Guessing the settings are wrong? There are 3 sets of numbers saying 33 45 and 78. Which one do I need? Also another set that say 12 - 30, 10 - 25 and 7 a 17.
As I said I’m a total beginner so no idea what I’m doing and appreciate all advice and help given.

Pressed phono after the turntable showed some life. Now playing but the sound quality isn’t great. A bit slow and drony if that makes sense? The table itself seems to turning unevenly. Goes up and down slightly. Would this affect the sound? Thanks.

33/45/78 are the speeds available in RPM (revolutions per minute). Most LPs are 33, most singles are 45. 78 is an old standard which you probably won't use.

7/10/12 are the sizes for automatic operation in inches (17/25/30 are the sizes in centimetres). Singles and EPs are usually 7", LPs and 12" singles are 12". 10" records of any type are very rare.

What type of record are you trying to play.? A 12" LP should be set to 12 and 33, 7" single should be set to 7 and 45. Try these.

As Paul's said, the speed setting should be 33 or 45 (try both, you won't cause any harm), and don't worry too much about the size setting lever at this stage. 78 rpm records were pretty much obsolete by about 1960 but lots of turntable manufacturers kept the speed available until about 1980ish, to cater for people with old records.

If it's gummed up (see above) then it may well sound slow and erratic. This was a fairly low-cost music centre, but it should be more than capable of playing records halfway decently.

The turntable shouldn't go 'up and down'. You're going to have to dismantle it to work out what's going on. It may have suffered physical damage over the years.

Thank you everyone for your help. I’ll see if I can gain access to see if it needs cleaning or whatever. At least I know it actually plays.

Does anyone have experience of dismantling this deck so can advise the OP? I've never done it with this model.

This looks like a late BSR single player of moderate quality, possibly belt driven. Indeed that WYE unit looks quite good for a WYE product - maybe a badged Far Eastern offering?

Idler driven version if it has the "78" speed. Turntable retained by a circlip, take the mat off to get at that. Will just need the "standard" servicing as detailed in one of the "stickies". Ceramic cartridge (SC11/12 type) with the flip-over stylus.

Yes

Are you sure it's the actual turntable? Unless it's been abused, it's more likely to be the mat isn't seated properly, or a warped record.

The turntable is a BSR P182 and is idler drive.

Sounds like it needs a good clean and service at the very least.
