I have now checked the original switch for positioning.
The centre is definitely not the OFF position.
Looking at the picture of the switch it is shown in the LW position, then going clockwise it is LW, MW, OFF.
The wiper contact is also the OFF position, as the rotary contact is in the wiper position when OFF.

Regards,
Dave

OK, I was confusing several models in my memory:
The Lissen version of the 5214 has on/off on the volume and a two position L/M switch. It has about 22 turns of wire on a second frame on the the back panel.
The A has a few turns (not sure how many) on the main cabinet aerial frame and AE sockets on the case.

It must be the C/E that has only a few turns on the rear panel.

There are just five paper caps under the chassis.

Here is switch central.

I've never powered it on.
Nor done anything except dismantle just now!

So fully clockwise (looking from rear) is obviously off, the LT+ wire is brown. Next clockwise is the red HT + wire after the two shorted pins.

I'll look at restoring it tonight seeing as it's in bits.

I'll do a separate thread.

Your switch looks wired the same, though one wiper looks a bit bashed.

Hi Mike,

Yes, both switches are the same.
The one wiper was bent out of place, that was easily put back in place.

The chassis also looks pretty much the same as mine.

This evening I had another try at alignment.
I have got the MW done now but I only get stations at the lower end of the band 200 to 300 Mtr. and only one very weak station after that.

The LW is not playing ball, only 1 station at 1000 Mtr. that does not belong there.
I should have 2 French stations and the 1 BBC station that I don't have.

I think that a lot of the problem may be the trimmers, they seem to need screwing down far to hard, to the point where they can not be moved.
This results in not being able to do the alignment correctly and having to make some compromise between the oscillator and the padder on both wavebands. The LW being the worst by far.

I now wonder if there is a problem with the oscillator coils, or maybe within their wiring when I rebuilt the can and wired it back to the chassis.

Dave.

I think the IF on those is 452Khz I expect you know that.

"they seem to need screwing down far to hard, to the point where they can not be moved."
That's a symptom of something else wrong.

Hi Mike,
Yes, 452 KHz.
I have no real idea as to what else could be wrong as it is all working now. Maybe the coils or even the trimmers have changed with age, just a thought.

I have today managed to get the alignment done on both wavebands.

For the MW I padded out the oscillator C9 with a 10 pf cap, that allowed the trimer be release from being screwed hard down, but the aerial padder C3 was released to the point of being fully open to obtain maximum output.
C12 was able to be release slightly but still tighter than it should be. However I now had stations right across the MW band.
MW is aligned now and working good.

I was able fetch the LW in as well by going backwards and forwards between 1000 Mtr. and 1700 Mtr. several times.
We now have the 2 French stations and the BBC station as expected.

I could pad out C12 and C11 with a 10pf cap to release them but that would mean removing the oscillator can from the chassis, major surgery. I decided not to do that.

Also I found that using external mod for the generator and with an 800Hz to 1KHz frequency was far better to use than the 400Hz from the generator.

It will be checked, and adjusted if required, when it goes back into the cabinet. Hopefully it will not need any adjusting as I had the frame aerial and power supply in place while it was on the bench, as they would be when in the cabinet.

Latter I will try a temporary induction coil, for an external aerial, on the back panel.

Regards,
Dave.

When it is all completed and back in the cabinet I will add a few pictures here.

Have the Osc coil connections inside the can been altered or disconnected and reconnected? Just wondering if they are series opposing instead of series aiding.

Hello Lawrence,

I think I did take the coils out of the can to check what caps were inside, just in case there were paper types in there.
What I actually did is way to far back, 2013, to remember now, but I doubt I would have disconnected them, I probably replaced some wires to the cans.
It is all wire ended, no connecting tags like an IFT, it would have been opened up for sure.

Anyhow I have it all aligned and working now, I completed that today and posted it here.

Regards,
Dave

Yours looks well.
I'll restore/repair the chassis and refurbish the cabinet.
Been busy with proof edits, so no progress yet.

Thanks, David.
