Default Broken tooth on Panasonic Z Deck

This morning I picked up a low use Super VHS deck (960) with remote for £20. Good value for one of these machines I think.

Checking it out now it works fine, the heads are good and all functions are good to go, however one of the teeth from the plastic cog which sits below the head was left in the rack (stuck by grease). The rack still pulls across but I wonder about it and don't want it jamming up with a tape in. The tooth is from the second set which sits under the metal so can't be seen in stop or play mode - only as it loads you can see the small space.

May I ask what the part number is or even if one of you has a spare to sell me?

Thanks for any help, Ian

Ian,

You must replace this gear, though they are now getting as rare as hens teeth. It WILL jam the mechanism if you dont replace it

Thanks Michael and Nick - I will send you a PM.

May I ask if there is a source for these gears or is it down to salvage from old VCR's now?

Considering I paid £700 for my NV-HS950, yes indeed!

Yes I was surprised to see this model for sale. I remember trying to get one new in 2004 but the stock at that point had sold out everywhere. The replacement deck for the HS960 was the HS930 so I paid £399 for that at Pinner Panasonic. However it was not so good as the power supply had been simplified and the picture was not so appealing with crushed blacks and some video ringing. I have found that Impel have these gears in stock and have ordered two today. I hope they send the right ones…

The part arrived this morning and after fitting it the VCR works like new. It is a very nice stable picture with the time base corrector and the frame store noise reduction - maybe the best I have seen from VHS.
