Hi Patrick,
I'll draw on a grid pattern on both pictures and on the surface of the veneer some reference points. This is a task I must do right. EMI were very good at their veneer matching. Remarkable when one considers the large quantities of TVs and radiograms the company made. I've never seen any faked work.

I restarted the cabinet restoration job. I'm strong enough now to tackle the big stuff, although no silly games like working out with that Black and Decker Workmate bench. Some of you guys know that story.

I've found some pieces of veneers to create a near match for the inner panels, it's not perfect yet and some more figuring work needs to be done, but you get the idea. Ref. to #89 to see the state it was in.

The right side cabinet foot has been refurbished and refitted.
Now the set has a more symetrical appearance.

I'm amazed at the transformation David, you're a magician!

Also glad to see that you're able to do more now (but for goodness sake don't get over-confident!).

All the best.

It's time to refurb the lid. The lid shown on the left side of the picture is the one contributed by a Forum member. As you can see the top surface is in excellent condition, only a tiny piece of veneer had flaked of. An easy fix.
That on the right is the original, it's not in good condition for sure. However, check out the second picture, the reverse side is in first class condition. Not so the other lid. It may be good on top, but the reverse side, the mirror side is pretty rough. It's an easy task to unscrew the mirror mounting parts and fit them to the good lid.

The front edge of the lid will need reveneering.

I can only say "unbelievable work" to you David
Who would have thought that the wreck we saw at the NVCF can be turned into something that could, once again, grace the living-room of a stately home or, of course, a vintage TV collection!
Fantastic.

Hi Ian, Hi Brian,
I'm on the home straight with this cabinet now, (to use a horse racing term) just some tidying up to do. The right side cabinet panel has been repaired, there was a dent which had to be filled, I use layered on veneer pieces stuck on with superglue and file it down until the surface is level and smooth. It's possible to make the repair look like a knot in the wood or some other detail.
The left side panel was a bit bashed up, and needed a fair bit of work, even so that job is nearly done.

As far as the cabinet lid restoration is concerned the lid donated by Danny has the best upper surface but the wooden parts on the underside are not so good.
The original lid upper surface you'll recall those who saw the set last year is in a terrible state.
The donated lid required reveneering work around the edges, that task has been done. The parts from the original lid have been transfered to the donated lid. Unfortunately one the wooden parts is badly stained, see pictures, and so the original corresponding part has been refurbished and will be fitted to the lid.

That's better. I will have to try to remove that stain on the other mirror support.

Fantastic stuff David, i am getting quite excited now really looking forward to getting it installed at home, the position it will occupy is currently held by a Singer treadle sewing machine but i think it's days are numbered.

In view of the mammoth amount of work that has gone into this restoration i think an open day is called for so those that are interested in seeing it in the flesh as it were can come and look at the transformation, there is also the "museum" in the garden with 50+ years of collecting mainly early radio and tv.

If there is enough interest we could probably arrange a "junk" swap.

Hi Mike, I'd look forward to that. Just taken another look at that thin wooden mirror support part. It actually appears to be in better condition than the part that's already in the cabinet. No stains, just needs rubbing down and repolishing.
