Uher 6000 Report Monitor Help
Hi,
I’ve got my 6000 report Universal working, but when I try to record with it, the sound on tape is very quiet and very distorted. The input monitoring is fine, so I know that the signal in is okay. When I replay a tape recorded on another machine, the playback is fine, so it is a recording issue. I was wondering if anyone could help me to identify what to do and how to fix it. Apart from this problem, the machine seems fine. I think it’s quite a rare one because it seems to have had a timecode generator fitted by Uher. I can post pictures or whatever if it helps. Thanks in advance again! Clive |

My first thought is that this sounds like a lack of bias. Does the bias oscilator also supply the erase head? If so, does the machine erase old recordings?

Re: Uher 6000 Report Monitor Help
Hello and thank you for helping me. I have now had the chance to try to erase on the machine and although it goes into record, absolutely no erasure whatsoever takes place. The tape I am using to test is a mono half track tape with a track recorded on both sides. The 6000, A’s you probably know is a half track mono recorder. Could I trouble you... or anyone who can help.... for what to do next?
A green light flickers when in record mode indicating, I believe, that time code is being recorded somewhere. I’d love an English manual for this 6000 report universal, especially with the Uher time code modification that is included within my machine. Really keen to get this recording!!!! I can send a service manual to anyone who feels they can help. I downloaded one recently. |

Re: Uher 6000 Report Monitor Help
It definitely sounds like a bias oscillator fault.
I don't think that a fault like this is something that anyone can easily advise on, as fault finding in this area isn't exactly like working on a Dansette type single stage amplifier and you need a good knowledge of electronic circuits, in particular oscillators and how they work. You'll also need certain test gear to fault find in this part of the circuit. If you're going to use old recording gear, then you really need to know how to service and fix it yourself, as the repair places of yesteryear are no longer around, and if you do find a 'specialist' to work on this sort of kit, then the cost of repairs is often going to be way more than it's worth. |
