Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
Hi all, I picked this up a number of years ago at auction in a lot of other things. I honestly have no idea what this is but I'm sure someone on here can tell me. It's a Runbaken , list no:1098 F, serial no: 4725. I have attached some pictures of the device. Unfortunately someone has had it open at some point and hasn't put it together properly, I'll be selling it soon because I'm having a clear out but would like to get it identified first.

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
It looks like it's some sort of ac magnetic field generator. Runbaken did all sorts of automotive test gear and the pillar looks like it would fit inside the field coils and yoke of a typical dynamo or starter motor.
Demagnetiser, maybe? Bearing heater? (Expands inner to slip onto shaft).

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
Some good suggestions there, a friend said it could be something to do with field coils too. Thanks for telling me about that plug, who knew it could hold such value! Hopefully someone will have a Runbaken catalogue or something and can tell exactly what it is.
Thanks for your help. Cameron |

Can we have a photo of what is inside it?

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
I haven't actually opened it myself yet, I'll maybe open it up tomorrow. The screws heads have been damaged badly so it may be difficult to take apart. I'll give it a shot though.

It will be interesting if you can get the screws out.

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
I was going to say that Runbaken did alot with ignition magnetos in the 1920's. Might it be a magneto remagnetiser?

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
I managed to get the screws out, wasn't too bad but the heads are ruined, I'll probably need to get new ones to put it back together. Here it is, I couldn't get it totally apart because I didn't know how to take the shaft part off but I got some decent photos. I have also attached the photo of the other plug, it says goltone on it if anyone can id this.
Thanks, Cameron |

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
Some kind of demagnetizer or possibly a growler?
The answer may be here:- http://americanhistory.si.edu/collec...ILNMAHTL_15574 Not convenient for quick research I'm afraid.

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
Almost certainly a magnetiser or de-magnetiser in my opinion. I can't see it as test equipment as it has no obvious means of feedback.
It might even still be viable, especially to someone who has old vehicles. Beaulieu might know exactly what it is and how it was used. |

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
It looks like the core is for a double model with the second probe covered by the case.
I would go for demagnetiser. |

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
On second thoughts, the chewed up screw threads and poor reassembly might suggest that something has gone open circuit inside.. No doubt someone somewhere will want it even if curio value only.

Re: Unidentified Piece Of Equipment
Very interesting, thanks for the help everyone. I'll get it put back together and now when it comes time to sell I at least have some idea of what it is. I'll have a look on that website Graham and see if I come across anything which tells me for sure what it is. Does anyone have any idea of the age of it? I would say 30's/40's but I'm really not sure.
