Perhaps a 499, the veneering looks right -
https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/hismasters_499.html This one's definitely been stripped and repolished. Paul |

Think you are right there Paul. I restored one of these years ago for someone else and was impressed by its performance and sheer build quality. Smooth slow-motion drive (once it was cleaned and re-greased) and RF amplifier.

Re: What is this radio ?
Yes as Paul has said it's the 499. Seems to have been beautifully refinished apart from it not having been pre-stained to create the darker panels around the middle section.

Re: What is this radio ?
The model number is usually on a small white plastic or celluloid tag at the bottom rear right hand corner of the set. Jerry

Re: What is this radio ?
I had one of those in my early teens. It was fantastic when I fed the output of my Phillips Disc Jockey Major into the gram input. Used to rattle the windows. It was also used to receive the final hour of Radio London, which I recorded on my friend's Grinding TK14, by dangling the Mic in front of the speaker. Sadly and stupidly, I let it languish in my shed at my parents house for 15 years. In 1983, I recovered it and realised it didn't have it's rectifier valve, I had pinched it for something else. I ordered a replacement (U19 I think ), but the set was well beyond repair by me at that time. I still have that valve if anyone needs one.
All the best Aub
