60's TV manufacturer in Bedfordshire
Here's one for you folks...
A neighbour of my parents used to work for a TV manufacturer in Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire in the late 60's to early 70's. The company was one of the 'I'm Backing Britain' brigade and used that very slogan on their premesis and vehicles. From this small amount of information it must have been around 1968. Other clues are that they were making early colour sets there. My parents can't remember the name of the company, so I'm putting it to you guy's. I grew up about a mile from the site and didn't even know of it's existance until today ! I've just searched the internet and found that 'Teledyne' were in the exact same area. Teledyne became 'Acoustic Research' opening a factory in Houghton Regis, near Dunstable in Bedfordshire in 1972. Does anyone know any more ? Kind Regards Dr. Dave

Re: 60's TV manufacturer in Bedfordshire
Hello Dr Watts,
Teledyne is a big US corporation but I don't think they were ever into making TV sets. Teledyne had a semiconductor manufacturing operation at one time. In 1972, Acoustic Research (AR) was at High Street, Houghton Regis, Dunstable, Beds. AR were a loudspeaker maker. At that time, a Teledyne (USA) subsidiary. Regards, Dazzlevision |

Was it Tyne? I think these sets were marketed through Tesco's at some point.
We could do with the 'Im backing Britain' campaign now. I have just learnt that the last true British manufacturer of electrical accessories has gone into administration. (Contactum) SimonT.

Hello,
From a Tyne service manual: Derek Tyne Ltd, Units 9, 10 & 11, Industrial Estate, Houghton Regis, Dunstable, Beds. Telephone Dunstable 69348. From the design of the circuitry, I'd date it at circa 1974-5. Regards, Dazzlevision |

I havent seen or worked on one of these since the early 80s. From what i remember they were a bit of a hotch potch. The panels looked like they had come from different manufacturers and were all cobbled together on a steel chassis. The cabinet had a very cheap look to it also. I guess they were budget sets though very much built to a price.

Hello,
This date may be wrong, but they seemed to be around in 1998! http://www.hants.gov.uk/scrmxn/c18262.html Michael |

Re: 60's TV manufacturer in Bedfordshire
Hi
I only ever saw one of these and it did look like a bit like a Telpro from the front, but the insides were more a variation on then current IC circuitry. Nothing spectacular in design or performance - I think the one I saw had a frame fault but I can't be sure. I doubt there are any left (hello Mikey?) but I also have a nice clean service manual for one in case there is! Can't imagine anyone designing and building a TV in Britain nowadays.... Wonder if that's the same firm? Google suggests that the firm was dealing with schools in the late seventies which would make sense. Glyn |

I remember they used a huge toridial transformer screwed to the bottom of the cabinet.

Re: 60's TV manufacturer in Bedfordshire
Tyne were officially imported to Australia around the 1975 to 1976 period. Their pricing was quite competitive with the other imported sets but it was a little bit more expensive than the equivalent size Decca sets.
I have an advertisement for them somewhere in a trade magazine. There selling point was that they were easy to service due to their spacious modular construction. |

Re: 60's TV manufacturer in Bedfordshire
I would agree they were made by Derek Tyne, and were sold by Tesco, I worked for a part of Telefusion that did third party service work for Tescos and we saw houndreds of them, LOPT, L/O transistor and tripler were common problems I recall.
I think they retailed at £199, and in my opinion were probably the worse telly ever. I hated them more than a Pye 205! |

Re: 60's TV manufacturer in Bedfordshire
Now now.....you could make a PYE CT205 sing and dance it also formed a part of a homes central heating...lol
Tyne televisions were very similar to the either the solid state Thorn or Decca and they performed well when going..!!!! |

Re: 60's TV manufacturer in Bedfordshire
Due to atmospherics, transmissions seem to have drifted way beyond the location of the former Bedfordshire factory. The Moderators have therefore decided not to renew the TV licence and are thus closing the thread.
