Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Mine too, lovely and sunny outside, I think this calls for a beer, a (portable) wireless and a jolly good read. Got the afternoon off (lucky me).
I have 5802 after my name on the envelope, does this mean there are more than 5082 subscribers? |

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Probably your membership number which isn't totally continuous and of course some members have passed on or left the society
Cheers Mike T

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Yes that is your membership number and will also be your bidding card number at BVWS auctions. Numbers do not get reused when members leave or pass away, so there will be a lot of gaps. The system just allocates the next number in sequence for each new member.
There are about 1200 active members currently I think. I don't know if the numbers started when the society was first created or when the membership records were first stored on computer, but either way it's a long time and many members will have come and gone. |

Arrived safely here today, though I note we are back on paper envelopes not plastic.

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Hi.
Mine also arrived today and as HamishBoxer states, a paper envelope has been used which in my case was torn along one edge. Fortunately, the bulletin was undamaged. Regards Symon. |

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Mine arrived today I am please to see it is in a recyclable paper envelope rather than a "not currently recycled" ocean - clogging polythene one...
I found the bollocking about buying and selling a bit of an insult When one member buys all the radios at £4 that no-one else wants what do the committee think he/she is doing with them? building a wall? No they are flogging them on or stripping them and selling the parts. The alternative ? unsold lots are smashed up apparently... How that helps "encourage the preservation of vintage equipment etc.." I have yet to fathom.... I sold a load of unwanted transistor radios at Harpenden a couple of years back along with a record player that I virtually gave away rather than take home. One chap bought the lot I was very pleased with the offer and glad to sell the radios. A week or so later my mate sent me a link to ebay where lo and behold there they were for sale . My thoughts were good luck with them. I could have done that myself but I would rather not have the hassle of packing and dealing with buyers expectations I was happy with what I got after that they were no longer mine. The BVWS did sell some radios on ebay a while back I think ? I don't understand why it's such a crime if a member does the same thing? What about our friend the phantom valve buyer? He has been buying valves and p1ssing people off for years. Is he a collector or a reseller? Is he to be banned? I do object to being addressed like a naughty school boy. I'm 57! Rich.

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Mine came this morning and I have already re-used the envelope to send a sevice sheet to a fellow member. It was just the right size.

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
And what a treat this issue is going to be!
I couldn't resist turning straight to the article about the fantastic miniature wireless shop. A couple of years ago, I made my wife a 1/12 scale 'room box', very roughly based on an early 20th century room she saw at the Black Country Living Museum. It took me nine months to finish it. I'd love to make a scale model wireless shop, but life's literally too short! Phil

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Rich,
Just for the record, The BVWS, as a Society has never sold any radios on Ebay. The buyer of all the valves was the person who had his membership of the Society terminated. Mike...

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
Hi,
well my copy arrived yesterday. But the postman insisted on folding it through the letter box ! I like the paper envelope, but could it say, please do not fold on it ....

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
An envelope saying "Please do no fold" is not a bad idea if it can be achieved without adding significant expense. Fortunately though, I ensured when my front door was replaced that it had a letterbox wide enough to accomodate A4-sized items without the need to fold them.
I too favour the recyclable paper envelope, having no local facilities for recycling plastic wrappers.

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
As long as "Do Not Fold" is not seen as a challenge! A bit like "Do Not Drop".

I somehow thought the sellers name was 'BVWS sales' or similar. I assumed it was someone selling on behalf of the society. I Must have got that wrong! As far as Do not bend working.. My other half works for Royal Mail and certainly in this area some of the post-persons have an attitude similar to a British Leyland employee of the 1970's so I wouldn't hold your breath! I would never put fragile on a package and expect it to be treat as fragile it would either be handled just the same or worse than one with no such instruction. The standard mail is all thrown and shoved into wheeled cages known as 'Yorks'. The days of Pat popping on the seat next to the cat are long gone!

Re: BVWS Summer 2018 Bulletin
I do seem to recall, in the days of the larger floppy discs, a claim (possibly apocryphal) that a package labelled "floppy discs - do not fold" arrived folded and annotated with "oh yes they do!" At least the inclusion of "Please" makes it clear that it is not a statement but a request - and a polite one at that.

It is possible that someone could be using the BVWS name who shouldn't be. If you come across that seller again please let the chairman know so he can check and take appropriate action. |
