Default Akai CR-80T motor noise

Hi.

I have just discovered the joys of 8 track tapes, so I bought an Akai CR-80T to try out. It works BUT there seems to be always slight power to the motor in any mode, it does not spin but hums slightly. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Yes, this is normal. I've four of that type of deck and they all do it. It's low-voltage DC applied as a motor brake to bring it and that heavy flywheel to a stop when coming out of play/rec/FF. I don't know why they do it all the time, I suppose it was cheaper to do it that way than fit some kind of timer.

Nice machine, one of the best. Yours is the one with the tuner in, isn't it?

Mark.

Hi, Thanks for that , yes mine has the tuner, its in bits at the moment as i am servicing it. Is a slight hiss over the speakers normal also when not playing?
Thanks for your reply.

Not sure really. Only one of my units has a built in amp and although I've had it for many years, I've never connected speakers to it directly. It's always been plumbed in to my main amp. Lots of smaller transistor amps do make a bit of background hiss. You could try connecting the line out signal to a separate amp, if you are so equipped.
