It's a long time ago but I'm sure it was something to do with the dial cord or drive but it certainly gave a very good performance.
Like all Philips products no matter how odd they always work 100%. I have never known a Philips product to be lack lustre when it comes to performance. John.
If you could sort that at 18 during a house call I'm seriously impressed! It would be the equivalent of a medical student doing a house call and performing a successful appendicectomy on the kitchen table.

Pictures of Bob's V5A. That Mazda UU4 has to go, can't have that make of valve in a Philips set! Got to be a Philips type 1821 or the Mullard equivalent.

"Hi David wonder if the original smoothing capacitor has been changed because it took out the original rectifier valve kind regards Bob"

Hi Bob,
That's possible or the wet electrolytics had gone low capacity and all that was available at the time of the repair was those TCC capacitors. Likewise for the Mazda valve. The UU4 is indirectly heated which is much better than the original directly heated 1821 valve. My V5A has a Mullard IW4-350 rectifier.
Close up picture of the original Philips wet electrolytic capacitors.

The dimensions of the Philips HT capacitors are: 63mm high and 39mm diameter.
Found one old capacitor which will be modified to fit in the V5. See attachment. Now on the lookout for another capacitor of the same type.

Hi Bob,
cut that old capacitor to size to fit in the V5A.
Capacity is 30 microfarads.

Hi Bob,
it was an 8microfarad 500 volt dry electrolytic. There might be another similar capacitor somewhere in the shop. Got plenty of the type that requires a capacitor clip.

Hi, I have a v7a made for the New Zealand market that I have restored.
You will need close to 10 meters! of replacement wiring as I found when I rewired mine.

This might prove useful for the crumbling yellow rubber insulation.....
(Philips seem to have had a penchant for this colour.)

Yes I had totally underestimated the amount of wire needed and had to order more to finish, all I needed to do to mine was replace all the wax and electrolytic caps and a good clean and polish (the set was totally original when I purchased it). I need to obtain a suitable grill cloth in order to finish the set. I also had to replace the output valve managing to find a nos valve at a good price. I'm away on holiday for the next 3 weeks but will post some pics on my return. I found some sutible pale yellow wire on aliexpress wich I used, just order 10 meters though 9
