Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Kitchen = Decca TPW70.
Bedside = Roberts RM33 About the house = Decca TP75 They will usually be tuned to my pantry transmitter, BBC R4 or Classic FM on the Roberts. The TPW70 is an eBay purchase that I have restored. The Roberts (also from eBay) did not require any work and the TP75 I cobbled together from 2 basket cases. This last was to replace one of the same colour that I bought new in the early 1960s and managed to loose over the years. I hope to have my Murphy A40 console back together soon and in regular use. |

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
I use a Sony MDS JE-520 minidisk player most days. I have a number of minidiscs loaded with 1930's dance band tracks. The player effectively gives an autochange facility for the discs plus random selection and up to about 24 tracks per disc.
P.S. I don't actually foxtrot around the lounge though.

Re Station X and Boxford Lathe.
In 1965 I bought for £37 a 1939 ish American "Southbend" lathe. I still use it fairly regularly for all those constructional and general DIY tasks where nothing else will do. It is just the job for cleaning / polishing the aluminium rings on my cooker hob as well. ( With abrasive pad, not a lathe tool! )

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Hacker Hunter Today on R4 in the mornings. Ekco A22 at least once a month for the odd 1940's 50's play and an Ekco Festival in the workshop. Red 706, I don't use it much since SHMBO nicked it for the lounge. Dial and press-button Trimphones in the workshop. And in use 24/7 the Magneta (PO36 type) master clock and four slave dials round the house.
At work I keep one of my AVO 8's on my bench, no one borrows it and a slide rule on my desk, every design I do has at least one calculation done with it the rest are done on an HP15C, all my calculators are RPN they don't disappear either. |

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Woken up by a late 60s Sony clock radio with flip-over numbers (8AW-59C?), had breakfast listening to LBC on a Beocenter 1800, shaved with a late 50s Philishave razor, was carried to work by a 1959 Volkswagen, currently listening to Roberts R606MB, should be working on a Smart & Brown lathe...

I used m Regentone NINE-3 stereogram (1958) this afternoon to play some records then listened to a bit of Steve Wright on FM on it. Now watching Murdoch mysteries on my Regentone TEN-17 tv (1960). Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
I also have a Boxford lathe from early 1960s rescued from a pile of 4 at the school where I taught maths. They were all ready to go to the scrap yard when, at the end of the 90s, the updated technology curriculum ruled them as obsolete. Such wonderful thinking!!! A replacement single phase motor In place of the three phase one was all that was required. Used most weeks and very useful.

Brings back memories. Many years ago I took one of these to Zambia, also converted. My Wife used it to listen to Deutsche Welle during the day for the music programme. I wonder if it's still there?

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
I'd say I listen to a vintage radio most days, during the summer more on my pre-war Murphy's as they're in my various out buildings down the garden.
Now the weather is not so nice I tend to use my FM sets in the house (poor LW and MW here) but FM ones sound great.

On the strength of this thread I've ensconced my Ekco PT306 ten-transistor portable in the kitchen.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Not a radio, I'm afraid, but here is the Sharp microwave in my kitchen. I've never really thought of it as 'vintage', but I suppose it is!
Bought new in 1991, this oven has been used many times, every day since then. It has nevr needed a repair, not even a replacement interior light bulb, and the clock keeps deadly accurate time (always correct to the second with the pips on R4) This thing is solidly built, with no loose or rattly bits, and the door shuts with a very pleasing 'thunk', like an expensive car! I dread the day when it stops working, because when I have used modern, top-brand microwave ovens, I have been seriously unimpressed.

Re: What vintage equipment did you actually use today?
Forgot to say, that's it's perfect inside too. Absolutely no rust or peeling paint, unlike some much newer ones I've seen.
I have always wiped it out after each use, to remove any moisture, so maybe that has made a difference. (Why do cats always want to know exactly what you are doing? It took me ages to take this photo without a cat's head or tail in the way!)

My contribution; my Goodmans Dimension 8 ‘speakers bought in 1973 and my grandad’s Christmas lights possibly pre-war. The lights have cotton covered rubber wire, still in good condition and brown ceramic bulb holders. Running out of pretty bulbs though!
